Apalla, Dinver M. BSHTM HRRM 1 JESUS OF NAZARETH Jesus was born near by the end of Herod (around 4 BCE).

He grew up in Nazareth in Galilee, about 150 kilometers north of Jerusalem. There are several business centers in Galilee. The city of Sephoris has a short distance from Nazareth which is one of the centers. Therefore the environment of Jesus was as rural as we usually think. Jesus studied in the synagogue of Nazareth. Then he probably became a woodworker. In his time the Jewish community was divided Jesus as Ministry: Four Broad Strokes I.) Jesus as Healer and Exorcist Jesus use his ability heal and exorcist because he is a compassionate and a forgiving person. 2 reasons why Jesus healed people: 1.) Jesus associated healing and miracles with the coming of the Kingdom of God and deliverance. 2.) Healing was also pointed to a direct relationship to God. II.) Jesus as a transformative wisdom Jesus was also address as a teacher in his lifetime by his, followers, opponents, and curious inquirers. Some believe that he is a teacher of a right belief needed for salvation and some of them believe that emphasize that he a teacher of good morals. But he was not a primarily a teacher of good morals but he was a teacher of a way of transformation. III.) Jesus as an Initiator of a Renewal Movement One of the remarkable features of the movement was its being grounded in the Spirits. Communication with the Spirits enabled Jesus to perceive a different way of transforming his society. The power of the Spirit was evident in the movement, in Jesus, and in some of his followers. IV.) Jesus as Prophet Jesus was known as a prophet or a messenger because he speak about the good news or the Kingdom of God. KINGDOM OF GOD Popular Ideas Concerning the Kingdom The dominant idea in the popular understanding about the Kingdom is that a place where people go after death. The Kingdom of God is equivalent to heaven understood as somewhere above the clouds where God dwells and a place where we will enjoy pure happiness. As Kingdom of God, the church has a mission to convert everybody into its fold. To become a Christian a person should undergo baptism. There are still some of the people who believe that when they become member of the church they identify themselves as being saved. Some of the people that the coming of the kingdom of God is the time of great calamity never before experience by human beings. In other words it is the end of the world. Jewish Culture In Jewish culture they believe that the Jesus is a Messiah. But the Jewish just use Messiah in symbolism for a good man, intelligent, and a helpful person. In Jewish culture they believe that they will go Nether world when die. When they go to Nether world they will wait for the resurrection for a new life. They also believe that the Kingdom of God can be achieve by having a good life and having freedom in the earthly reality. Greco Roman Culture In Greco Roman Culture they Believe that Jesus as one of the gods that will them to salvation and to purify them. The Greco Roman believes on it because of the miracles that Jesus did. The Greco Roman Culture also believes that Jesus is a Messiah. But they interpret it in a literal way so they believe that Jesus is also the Son of God, an extraordinary man in the way that he can heal any kind of sickness. They that the Kingdom of God is the Heaven where the good souls go while the bad souls go to the underworld. It is also the same when it comes to church becoming member of a church means that they are being saved.

He is thought of as Gods Son whose mission is to die for the sins of the world. Filipino believe that those who does not believe him will not share in eternal happiness. Our sketch will just point out significant elements that will indicate somehow the presence of a dominant view of Jesus among many Filipinos Christianity: 1.)Jesus as the Son of God and Son of Mary 2.)Jesus as Host 3.)Jesus as Suffering Servant 4.)Jesus as Christ the King 5.) Jesus, the Miracle Worker
