Module 1 - Lesson 1.2

The document discusses the sources of authority in ethics, including law, religion, and culture, highlighting that while these can guide behavior, they do not universally define morality. It emphasizes that law provides boundaries but does not dictate moral pursuits, religion offers divine commands, and culture presents diverse ethical perspectives. Ultimately, the document argues that reasoning is the fundamental source of ethical authority, as it underpins moral principles and human decision-making.

LESSON 1.

2:

SOURCE OF AUTHORITY
“LYING IS BAD!”
Can LAW,RELIGION and CULTURE
be a source of authority in
ETHICS?
LAW

- It is supposed that law is one’s guide to

ethical behavior. In Philippines, Filipinos are
constrained to obey the laws of the land as
stated in the country’s criminal and civil
codes.
- The law cannot tell us what to pursue, only
what to avoid.
LAW
According to Article 332 of the Revised Penal Code
of the Philippines: states that persons exempt from
criminal liability in the event of the crimes of the theft,
swindling or malicious mischief include spouses of
relatives by affinity in the same line, the widowed
spouse with respect to the property that belonged to
deceased spouse and brother and sisters or brothers-
in-law and sisters-in-law.
“What is legal is not necessarily moral”
RELIGION

The divinity called God, Allah, or

Supreme Being commands and one is
obliged to obey his/her Creator. (Divine
Command Theory).
RELIGION
-Various Religion in different
countries!
-Which among these religion
is the ultimate source of
ethics?
-There are also individuals
who are atheist!
CULTURE
Our exposure to different societies and their cultures makes us
aware that there are ways of thinking and valuing that are different
from our own, that there is in fact a wide diversity in how different
people believe it is proper to act. Therefore, what is ethically
acceptable or unacceptable is relative to , or that is to say,
dependent on one’s culture.
Example:
“Living together after marriage”
CULTURE
Like, religion we also have numerous culture!
Example:
Namibian tribes
When a visitor comes knocking, a man shows his approval and pleasure
of seeing his guest by giving him the Okujepisa Omukazendu treatment.
This practice literally means that his wife is given to his guest to spend
the night while the husband sleeps in another room.
The standards of ethics must be universal!

So, what is the source of authority in ethics? Since it must be applicable

to all.
What makes us human unique from other creatures, regardless
from what kind of religion, law and culture that we have?
REASONING
The reason is the source of authority in ethics!
Have you ever asked yourselves why I am not
stealing goods?
-As a young we are afraid to be punish.
-As an older one afraid of getting in prison.
But this is to0 shallow
It wrong because it violates the principle of
fairness, and the respect of others property.
-Not about the religion, law and culture.
Moral Principle of Humans
-The ground of our judgement, that justifies our decisions.
-It will be the basis for our existence as a human being as
well as decision making.
-It is established in moral theory, and moral theory is a
system of ideas that evaluates our valuing of actions, our
concluding decisions.
