Sources of Authority

• Can law, Religion And Culture be the

Sources of Authority in Ethics?
Law
It is supposed that law is one’s guide to ethical behavior. In
the Philippines, Filipino’s are constrained to obey the laws of
the land as stated in the country’s criminal and civil codes.
The law cannot tell us what to pursue, only what to avoid.
“What is legal is not necessarily moral”

According to the Article 332 of the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines:
states that persons exempt from the criminal liability in the event of the
crimes of theft, swindling or malicious mischief includes spouses of relatives
by affinity in the same line, the widowed spouse with respect to the property
that belongs to the deceased spouse, and brother and sister or brother-in-
law and sister-in-law.
Religion

• The divinity called God, Allah or

Supreme Being commands and one
is obliged to obey his/her Creator
(Divine Command Theory).
Culture

Our exposure to different societies and their cultures

makes us aware that there are ways of thinking and
valuing that are different from our own, that there is in
fact a wide diversity in how different people believe it is
proper to act. Therefore, what is ethically acceptable or
unacceptable is relative to, or that is to say, dependent on
one’s culture.
What is the Sources of Authority
in Ethics?
The REASON is the
Sources of Authority
in Ethics.
Conclusion
Man realizes that we must be able to give a good reason that will be
acceptable to or something that would make sense.

Stealing is wrong because it violates the principle of fairness and the respect
of others property. Its not because its against the laws, religion, not
acceptable in culture, it is because we think deep, we find answers to the
questions why we reason and it will come to a realization that it will violate
principle of fairness.

This principle becomes the ground of our judgment that justifies our
decisions.
