Name: Sheila Hemami Major: EE Year Graduated: 1990 Advice for students considering graduate programs: If you want to do a PhD, the two most important factors for success are having a compatible working style with your advisor and loving your problem. You have to mesh with your advisor to get the most out of the learning/mentoring experience. You have to love your problem such that when you stay up late setting up a simulation or experiment and you wake up at 6am the next morning, you cant wait to get back into the lab to see the results. Solving a problem that no one else has solved is difficult enough without also having to deal with interpersonal stress and being bored. Your favorite thing about SWE or a favorite SWE memory: Being part of motivated and supportive community that was constantly striving for excellence. Company: Cornell University Job Title: Professor & Associate Director Hobbies: Cooking/eating, travel, and combining the two Advice for new grads: If you have a BS and want to be an engineer in the workforce, get a masters degree the return on investment is tremendous.

Hi all I hope the semester is ending smoothly, and that you are all managing to get more sleep than I have lately. Around three oclock this morning, a hail storm rolled through Cinci, and the hail was so large that it triggered the alarm of the vehicle parked immediately outside my bedroom window twice. Weather is not the only reason I have been having trouble sleeping lately. First of all, my beloved section head (my managers manager) has been reassigned to a different sector of Shampoo FEI (frontend innovation). I have pledged to maintain contact with her and use her as a mentor. My team and I walked our new section head through an on-boarding session on our project on Monday. She proceeded to question and/or criticize every initiative and piece of data we presented. It is clear that she possesses a very different management style from my former section head this is unfortunate because it might prove to be a rocky transition, but it will also provide valuable experience and an opportunity to display my flexibility. On top of that, this week has been a race between myself and the Pantene Claims organization to get product submitted to our methods group for testing. I have been making huge volumes of shampoo at breakneck speed so that I do not get stuck behind Claims and their ten-cycle pre-treatments if that happens, I will completely blow a June deadline. To make matters worse, one of the major pieces of equipment used by our methods group, and since those machines are ancient, they are no longer produced and we have to call in special favors to have them fixed... time, time, time. One positive thing that I can say about my internship thus far is that I appreciate the variability in pace. The pace is sometimes relaxingly slow, until I reach the point of boredom, and then it tends to accelerate. I never know what to expect P&G definitely keeps me on my toes. -Natalie Eyke

Dear Abby,
I'm graduating this semester :( What should be on my bucket list of things to do before I leave? Sincerely, ??? Dear Three Question Marks, Ah! This question again. My favorite to answer because it means that you think Im knowledgeable of the city. My first recommendation would be to make your way to Pinball Petes Arcade on South U. This is a perfect place to relive your childhood will all the familiar arcade games. So grabs some friends (or your crush) and have a pocket full of quarters and get ready to get lost for a few hours. My other advice to you would be to take a stroll around North Campus. And when I say North Campus, I mean ALL OF North Campus. There are so many different works of art and buildings laying around, it would be a shame to say you went to school here for four years and missed out on so and so. Good luck with your last few weeks and may you have some fun last adventures! Dear Abby, I'm a junior and now that the end of the semester is rearing its head, I'm starting to realize that all my senior friends will be graduating and moving on. It just hit me that I will miss all my senior friends so much that I don't even know how to handle it! Abby, how can I keep in touch with them when they're all moving to different parts of the country!? With graduation so near, it's also got me thinking about myself and how little time I have left at this wonderful university! I can't believe that I'll be a senior next year and I can't even imagine how I will be able to fill the shoes of the wonderful seniors that came before me. They were all such great role models and friends. How can I be like that for my younger SWEsters? Oh Abby, everything is just so bittersweet, what should I do? Sincerely, JuniorProblems Dear JuniorProblems, Though it is very sad to say goodbye to dear friends, there are plenty of opportunities to stay in contact with friends. Lets first stress the fact that our lives are run by technology and that it is quite easy to stay in contact with people through facebook and e-mail. Whenever you see something on the interest that reminds you of your friend, post it on their wall, and voila!, you have a little catching up conversation. Dont forget too that the first year after one graduates Michigan, they have an intense desire to go back there, so some friends will probably be visiting next year and you can reconnect then as well. And finally, remember that when you graduate, youll still have all those friends that live all over the country...sounds like perfect vacationing opportunities to me. Now thinking of filling those wonderful seniors shoes, I know this will be a hard task because we are graduating away a wonderful senior class. To keep their SWE spirit going, you should continue the friendly atmosphere to younger members, as they did unto you once upon a time. The key to bringing the SWE community together is to be friendly and helpful to everyone. Friendships seem to blossom from there and being a role model comes from representing SWE the way you want others to see it. I know I havent given too specific advice here, but I trust that you know what you liked about the graduating class and what you want to carry on after they leave. Stay strong, JuniorProblems.

Your time is limited, dont waste it living someone elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other peoples thinking. Dont let the noise of others opinion drowned your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. -Steve Jobs
