The Sprint
Cup season is
only five
races old, but
Clint Bowyer
has gone a
long way
toward eliminating the uncer-
tainty that clouded his career
during the off-season.
Bowyer, 32, made his name
at Richard Childress Racing,
where he won five races since
joining the Cup ranks full-time
in 2006. Twice he won at New
Hampshire Motor Speedway, in
2007 and 2010, and at Talladega
Superspeedway, in 2010 and
2011. He also won at Richmond,
in 2008.
Late in 2011, Bowyer found
that, due to sponsorship issues,
there was no place for him at
RCR. The Emporia, Kan.,
native considered several offers
and decided to move to Michael
Waltrip Racing, where his No.
15 Toyota is sponsored by
5-Hour Energy Drink.
Waltrips team has won only
twice since its inception in
2007. RCR has won 100 Cup
races, dating back to 1983.
So far, so good. Bowyer
ranks ninth in the Cup stand-
ings with one top-five and two
top-10 finishes.
These MWR cars have been
good ever since (teammate
Martin) Truex was running
good at the end of last year,
Bowyer said. Just real proud
of everybody.
Looking at last year, they
showed signs of brilliance, and
then, I think, where they lacked
was being consistent through-
out the year. If were able to go
there, thats one thing thats
always been my strong point. If
I can continue my consistency
... thats what were missing.
Bowyer never felt the per-
ceived uncertainty regarding
his latest career move.
In this sport anymore, the
cars are so much the same that
the only real thing youre start-
ing over with is the group of
people, he said. Sometimes
change can be good and bad.
Theres no question that, last
year, I didnt have the success
that I expected and that I want-
ed.
Maybe it was time to make
a change, and Ill be able to
answer that in a year or so. I
really see a lot of potential here,
a lot of things coming together
at the right time for me to make
a change and ride that wave on
into the future.

There is still some skiing going on in the USA, witness
Kirkwood Mountain Resort in Kirkwood, CA, the site of the final
event of the 2011-12 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT).
East Montpelier native and Mad River Glen enthusiast Silas
Chickering-Ayers spent the past week at Kirkwood 35 miles
south of Lake Tahoe competing for his second ever North
American Freeskiing Championship event win.
Chickering-Ayers, 19, skied to his first ever FWT career win last
month at Snowbird (Utah). I did the first two stops on the Tour in
Argentina and Chile, but havent been to every event this season,
Chickering-Ayers said, I was already in Utah and I was pre-
qualified, so I entered at Snowbird. It couldnt have gone better.
Snowbird (vertical drop 3240 ft) is a favorite site for Chickering-
Ayers. It was there in 2011, that he earned the Freeskiing World
Tours coveted Sickbird Award, which honors the athlete with the
most spirit, style and wow-factor. His older brother, Lars, currently
sidelined with a broken collarbone, won the 2010 Snowbird com-
petition.
Freeskiing is different than freestyle skiing, which is a judged
Olympic sport with competitions in moguls and aerials.
Freeskiers choose their own line down long, steep, 45-60 per-
cent grades within a variety of terrain, moguls, and trees. Its an
understatement to say its not for the faint of heart. Think roller
coaster ride over cliffs, fir groves and outcrops of rock with occa-
sional 40 mph crosswinds.
Competitions are scored by a panel four judges that evaluate five
categories 1) line i.e. path taken 2) control falling costs you in
more ways than one 3) fluidity dont just do it, look smooth
doing it 4) technique such a stance and shoulder positioning 5)
style creative and free thats the new style component rather
than aggressiveness, says Freeskiing World Tour judge Jim Jack,
we dont want to find ourselves rewarding or encouraging danger-
ous or uncalculated decisions.
Chickering-Ayers is a Wagner Custom Skis Factory Team ath-
lete, who also gets sponsorship support from Fly Low Gear, Mad
River Glen, Ski the East in Williston and Darn Tough Socks in
Northfield.
Ive had a great season on the tour and making videos,
Chickering-Ayers said. At Kirkwood, there will be about 60 com-
petitors attempting to qualify. About 20 of them will advance to the
next round where they go against 20 or more pre-qualified skiers.
I was 6th on the overall tour in 2011, thats how I am pre-qualified.
Lars is out with the injury, but he had fun as a judge for the under-
18 competition. Hes developing an Alpine touring system for
hiking/skiing in the backcountry.
The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour is the largest and longest
running competitive big mountain freeskiing tour in the history of
the sport with an unprecedented six stops. Founded in 1998, the
FWT, created and produced by Mountain Sports International, Inc.,
is heading into its 15th year. In addition to up to $110,000 in win-
nings, the world tour champions are awarded the McConkey Cup,
honoring legendary skier Shane McConkey, founder of the IFSA.
Guerlaine Chicherit of France is the current FWT point leader.
Reine Barkered of Sweden is the 2012 champion of the Freeride
World Tour, based in Europe.
The two tours may merge next year, which would be excit-
ing, Chickering-Ayers said. Freestyle is growing quickly in
popularity.

In level 5 competition, Sunrise Gymnastics
had only one competitor, Cassidy Murdock, who
received a bronze medal for her vault.
The last silver medal added to the Sunrise
Gymnastics collection was for Ashima Fillbach

Paddle through the Heart of Vermont on the Winooski River Sojourn
Friends of the Winooski River is hosting the
Winooski River Sojourn June 19-24, 2012. This
six-day paddling trip down the Winooski River
draws participants from across the Northeast to
canoe or kayak on Lake Champlains largest
tributary watershed. The trip begins in Marshfield
and ends at the mouth at Lake Champlain in
Burlington. Each day participants experience
new aspects of the river from narrow, winding
channels on day one to wide, flat gentle flows on
day six, along with breathtaking views.
The Sojourn is a guided river tour led by
kayak and canoe instructors as well as an expert
Vermont naturalist. Participants will have the
opportunity to learn about the birds, mammals,
fish and plants of the Winooski as well as the
geologic history of the watershed during daily
presentations. In addition to natural history, pad-
dlers will also get to experience some of the
great food offerings of Central Vermont.
The Winooski River flows for 90 miles from
Cabot to Lake Champlain traversing a wide vari-
ety of landscapes including agricultural land,
forested areas and picturesque Vermont towns,
including the capital, Montpelier. It passes
through three spectacular gorges including the
Middlesex Gorge, the Lime Kiln Gorge and the
Essex Dam Gorge - the former and latter are
present day hydro power generation sites. The
Winooski River Sojourn offers an unparalleled
opportunity to explore one of Vermonts most
important rivers.
Participants can choose to paddle for a single
day or all six days. Food, camping and transpor-
tation are included for multi-day paddlers. Lunch
and dinner is provided for single day paddlers.
Single days start at $65/person except Sunday,
which is $30/person. The six day trip is $350/
person.

ACT Chevy vs. Ford Heats Up in 2012
Three years ago the American Canadian Tour (ACT)
introduced a Ford crate engine option to their racing
program. The goal was to give the Late Model teams
some variety, and hopefully make the racing more
exciting for the fans, many of whom are die hard Ford
fans.
Many of the top teams in ACT elected to switch from
the Chevrolet crate program, which had been the main-
stay of ACT racing since it was developed in 1999.
After a couple of years of tweaking the rules, officials
are hoping that the two major manufacturers engine
programs have reached the ultimate goal of parity for
which ACT racing is known. The goal of Late Model
racing has always been to make it a drivers series,
not a cubic dollar series.
When I was asked to test the original version of the
Ford crate motor, I knew it would take some time to get
things sorted out. There was no perfect science without
actually competing with the engines in actual race
conditions, said Chris Michaud, the three-time
Thunder Road Champion and original team elected to
do the Ford testing.
The most difficult part of getting the two engines in
compliance has been the different needs for different
sized tracks. Engine set back requirements for the
Ford, different torque levels, particularly high end
torque, have been a challenge. With the help of Butler
& MacMaster Engines, and a lot of co-operation from
teams, we think we have reached that goal for 2012.
There are some adjustments we have made over the
past couple seasons, and along with the rule changes
we have made going into 2012, that should help make
both engine more compatible. Now it is up to the driv-
ers and team set ups, as it should be, said Dean
Gallison, the Director of Competition for ACT.
Some of the challenges will come from the following
teams in 2012:
ACT US
Chevy Ford

for the 22nd running of the New Hampshire Governors

There will be no less than thirteen former champion drivers
entered in the 2012 ACT opener at Lee USA this Sunday. Be-
tween them they have accumulated 48 track and/or touring series
championships during their careers. The annual opening day New
Hampshire Governors Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway is expected
to eld the best opening day group of racers in its 22 event history.
Heading the list of former champions is Brian Hoar, Williston, VT.
Hoar is an eight-time ACT Champion and also owns a Thunder
Road and Airborne track championship and is the defending NH
Governor Cup winner. Jean-Paul Cyr, Milton, VT is a seven-time
ACT Champion and also is the 2010 Thunder Road track Cham-
pion. Part-time ACT driver and noted car builder with nine Oxford
Plains Speedway Pro Stock titles, Jeff Taylor from Farmington,
ME, along with two-time Oxford Pro Stock Champion Ricky
Rolfe from Farmington, ME will look to take the Cup back to
the Pine Tree State. A home track favorite from New Hampshire
and top ACT US competitor will try and bring the Governors
Cup back home to the Granite State. Wayne Helliwell, Jr. has 6
championships; he is a two-time Ford Blue Oval Champion and a
four-time Lee USA track Champion. Another favorite looking for
his rst ACT win is Lancaster, NHs Quinny Welch who has three
titles at the White Mountain Motorsports Park. Randy Potter from
Groveton, NH is a former Riverside Speedway Champion and
veteran ACT challenger. Two surprise entries for the 2012 open-
ing event have been received by perennial title contenders on the
ACT Castrol Series in the Province of Quebec. Former champions
Donald Theetge, Boischatel, QC and Karl Allard from Ste. Fel-
icien, QC will join the rest of the champions. Three-time Airborne
Champion Brent Dragon, Milton, VT and another Airborne Late
Model Track Champion Mark Lamberton from Mooers Forks, NY
have led entries for the prestigious crown. Thunder Road former
track Champions Jamie Fisher, Shelburne, VT and Nick Sweet
from Barre, VT are both capable of contending for the NH Gover-
nors Cup and carrying the hardware back to Vermont.
Canaan Fair Speedways Awesome Asphalt facility in Ca-
naan, NH is undergoing another face lift this spring. Due to all the
damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene late last summer, numer-
ous paving and repaving projects are on the board. The pit area will
be repaved as well as several new spots of paving will take place.
The pit area was destroyed in 2011 after being newly paved prior
to the start of the season. The NASCAR sanctioned facility will
see a host of new sponsorship signage as well as new ofcial uni-
forms, and some new pit lighting along with an improved pit sound
system. The transformation on the dirt facility will pull some of
the awesome from the asphalt side as a new; state of the art track
lighting system has been installed. From preliminary viewing, the
new light system is going to be a tremendous improvement for
both fans and drivers alike. Track ofcials have also installed new
tire barriers on the inside of the turns to help keep drivers from
passing cars on the ineld, and also help re-congure the track
back to its original state.

The big news at Grovetons Riverside Speedway is the up and
coming car show location on Saturday, May 12. For the rst time
in the forty eight year history of Riverside Speedway the car show
will be held in down town Groveton. We could not be more ex-
cited, having both the Town of Groveton and the State of N.H,s
blessing, stated speedway general manager Curtis Robinson. A
lot of time and hard work was put into this by our pit steward Min
Kennett. Shes the one responsible and the one that has put it all
together. The tentative car show format will be announced by the
speedway in a couple of weeks.
All continue to chase Greg Bife, whose revamped team under
direction of crew chief Matt Puccia has been the steady Eddie
of the 2012 season. Bife took over the points lead after nishing
third at Las Vegas and, with three top-ve and four top-10 nishes,
has refused to relinquish the spot he hadnt held since mid-2005.
Bife, Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth and last years champi-
onship runner up Carl Edwards give Roush Fenway Racing three
spots among the top 12. Bife isnt the only driver wearing a smile.
Stewart-Haas Racing has won three times in six races, two by de-
fending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart and
one by Ryan Newman.
2012 has been a remarkable turnaround at Michael Waltrip Rac-
ing: Martin Truex Jr. and newcomer Clint Bowyer solidly among
the top 10 in points and a third entry shared by veteran Mark Mar-
tin and Brian Vickers also in the top 10 of the owners champion-
ship standings.
Stewart-Haas Racing has three wins in the rst six races with
Tony Stewart third and Ryan Newman, the winner at Martinsville,
eighth in points. Nemans crew chief Tony Gibson talked about
how SHR operates as one team with the condence that either
driver could win each week: We know we are working hard as a
company to make sure both these cars are as close as we can get,
other than what the two different drivers need, little things. We
have everything there we need to win every week. Its hard to win
every week, but we have got the equipment and the drivers to do
it. We just have to execute and make sure it happens. SHR has
won eight of its past 16 starts dating to the beginning of last years
Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Just two races into the 2012 season, the young guns continue to
outshine the veterans in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Se-
ries championship standings. The top eight who have never won
a series championship - are separated by only 21 points. Daytona
winner John King remains the standings leader by one point
over Red Horse Racing teammate Timothy Peters following a solid
ninth place nish at Martinsville. King is the rst Sunoco Rookie
of the Year contender to lead the championship after multiple rac-
es. Cole Whitt was the rst rookie overall points leader following
last Mays race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The award for most
impressive turnaround goes to third place contender Justin Lof-
ton. The Eddie Sharp Racing driver has kicked off the season with
two back-to-back top-ve nishes a feat he hasnt accomplished
since 2010. Rookie standout Ty Dillon who nished an impres-
sive second at Martinsville and Jason White complete the top
ve followed by James Buescher, Parker Kligerman and Brazilian
Nelson Piquet Jr. Dillon is the rst rookie to score a runner-up
nish at Martinsville Speedway since Todd Kluever in the fall of
2005.
What Theyre Saying
Well, we have a new car built at the McColl shops in Ontario
and have tested it with the McColl folks. I know Richard Green
Racing has been involved in ACT racing for a long time, and I
would love to get things started at Lee like we did last year at New
Smyrna. The key for us is to get the car to last and be consistent. I
would love to have a great season for Rick (owner RGR), Mark
Lamberton on this Sundays ACT opener at Lee USA Speedway.
Next Lap
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to action
on Sunday, April 15 at Rockingham Speedway for the inaugural
Good Sam Road Side Assistance 200. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
standout Kasey Kahne announced last week he will pull the double
competing in the NSCS race at Texas Motor Speedway on Sat-
urday night before ying to Rockingham for the NCWTS event on
Sunday. Kahne has three truck series victories (two at Darlington
and Homestead) in four previous starts.
Will the trend of non-Cup Series regulars winning most of the
Nationwide Series events continue? Nationwide Series regulars
have won four out of ve to date. Well nd out on April 13 at
Texas Motor Speedway where Trevor Bayne, a NASCAR Na-
tionwide Series regular and the 2011 Daytona 500 winner won
last November. Race coverage will begin at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
The lights will come on at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday
night as the Cup cars take to the 1.5-mile quad-oval for the Sam-
sung Mobile 500 (FOX, 7:00 p.m. ). Matt Kenseth is the defend-
ing race winner breaking a two year win-less streak of 76 races
last April. Tony Stewart holds the track race record, 152.705 set
on November 11, 2011. Brian Vickers holds the tracks qualifying
record of 196.235 set in 2006.

Bond Auto to Sponsor ACT Invitational
at New Hampshire Motor Speedway
They provide the parts that
create a winning ride and
now theyll be there in vic-
tory lane no matter who wins
the American-Canadian Tour race on Saturday,
September 22. New Hampshire Motor Speedway
officials announced last week that Bond Auto, a
New England based full service auto parts retail
and wholesale store, will be the title sponsor for
the ACT Invitational during the fall NASCAR
weekend.
The Bond Auto Parts ACT Invitational will be
part of The Magic Miles short track Saturday
Showdown during the SYLVANIA 300 week-
end. The thrilling day features, NASCARs
K&N Pro Series East New Hampshire 100 and
the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour F.W. Webb
100. Last year, it was Rowley, Mass. native
Eddie MacDonald who raced his way from 25th
to first in just a few laps, capturing the checkered
flag.
Bond Auto is no stranger to the motorsports
industry. The Vermont company in the past has
sponsored several drivers at Richard Petty
Motorsports including
Kasey Kahne and A.J.
Allmendinger.
As a company that is
aligned so closely with motorsports, we are
always looking for the best way to support the
racing scene so that everyone benefits, stated
Mark Mast, Vice President of Marketing at Bond
Auto. By sponsoring divisions or a particular
race, everyone from the fans to the drivers are
affected.
We are ecstatic to have Bond Auto Parts as
our sponsor for the American-Canadian Tour
Invitational in September, said Jerry Gappens,
executive vice president and general manager of
the speedway. As a New England based com-
pany, they have realized the marketing power of
auto racing in the northeast. We are very pleased
that they are joining us in 2012 to help showcase
all of the excitement that NHMS has to offer.
For more details or to purchase tickets for the
2012 season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway,

Devils Bowl Speedway Awarded NASCAR
Capital Improvement Grant
Devils Bowl Speedway in West Haven,
Vt. has been awarded a grant for capital
improvements and facility upgrades worth
$10,000 from NASCAR. The prize was
awarded on Saturday, February 18 during a
conference at Daytona International
Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Under its new ownership for 2012, the
asphalt half-mile Devils Bowl track will
see installation of a new concrete retaining
wall and paving of the pit garage area access
roads. The NASCAR funds are part of a
total $100,000 grant divided among ten
weekly local speedways in the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series program.
We were surprised and very honored to
be selected to receive the capital improvement
funding, said Devils Bowl Speedway media
and marketing director Justin St. Louis. The
fact that NASCAR has shown us this much sup-
port so early in our new program is encouraging.
Well be putting the grant money to good use in
the beginning of our long-term renovations.
Other tracks receiving capital improvement
funding from NASCAR were Cedar Lake
Speedway in Wisconsin, Concord (NC)
Speedway, Kingsport (TN) Speedway, Ohios
Lake County and Limaland Speedways,
Motordrome Speedway in Pennsylvania, Idahos
Magic Valley Speedway, Rockford (IL)
Speedway, and Canadas Barrie Speedway.
Devils Bowl Speedway opens its 46th season
of stock car racing on Sunday, May 6, with the
Spring Green 112 for the American-Canadian
Tour Late Models, along with the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series Modifieds,
Renegades, and Bombers. Other special events
throughout the year include the Vermont State
Late Model Championship 100 on Friday, June
8, the Firecracker Twin 44s and fireworks dis-
play on Wednesday, July 4, and the Vermont
200 season finale weekend on September
15-16.

U-32 sophomore varsity basketball player Madison Bennett
decided about a month ago that it would be great to help the
Herring family whose daughter Shaina recently was diagnosed
with Stage 3 Anaplastic Large Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
She is ALK positive and overall is doing well. Shaina is an eager
basketball player who is a 4th grader at Doty Memorial. U-32
opened their adjacent gym to a packed house. The game scoring
was close with none of the faculty asking for oxygen. The Doty
3rd and 4th grader team vs the Doty Staff provided half -time
entertainment. Preliminary counts show the event totaled over
$1700 which all goes to the Herring Family.
