GENERIC NAM Betamethasone INTRODUCTION Betamethasone is an effective glucocorticoid steroid having anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties . . Unlike other drugs with these effects, betamethasone does not cause
water retention. Betamethasone sodium phosphate is very soluble in water, and is therefore less likely to cause local gastric irritation than corticosteroids which are only slightly soluble.

COMPOSITION
Each tablet contains 500 micrograms (0.5mg) betamethasone as betamethasone sodium phosphate .

USE
It is used in bronchial asthma, severe hypersensitivity reactions, anaphylaxis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, mixed connective tissue disease (excluding systemic sclerosis), polyarteritis nodosa; Inflammatory skin disorders, including pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid and pyoderma gangrenosum. It is also little effective in nephrotic syndrome, acute interstitial nephritis; Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, sarcoidosis, rheumatic carditis; Haemolytic anaemia (autoimmune), acute and lymphatic leukaemia, malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura; Immunosuppression in transplantation. Betamethasone is also used to stimulate fetal lung maturation ( prevention of IRDS), and to decrease the incidence and mortality from intracranial hemorrhage in premature infants

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION


Betamethasone sodium phosphate is used orally and via intramuscular injection .

CONTRAINDICATION
People with widespread infection, unless this is being treated with specific anti-infectives.It should not be used for the management of head injury or stroke.

PRECAUTIONS
Betnesol tablets should be taken in the morning to mimic the natural production of corticosteroids by the body. They should be taken after food to minimise irritation to the stomach. The tablets are best taken dissolved in water, but can also be swallowed whole.

SIDE EFFECTS/ADVERSE EFFECTS


Endocrine/metabolic suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, growth suppression in infancy, childhood and adolescence, menstrual irregularity and amenorrhoea. Cushingoid facies, hirsutism, weight gain, impaired carbohydrate tolerance with increased requirement for antidiabetic therapy.

STORAGE

It should be kept in the normal room temperature ranging from 2 degree celsius to 30 degree celsius. It should not be exposed to the direct radiations. Better it should be stored away from the reach of the children and the pets.
