The Conference The 5th International Conference on Energising Indian Aerospace Industry: Achievements and Future Strategies on December 15-16, 2010 seeks to highlight recent achievements, the nature of future strategies and how the private sector has also begun to play a larger role in defence research and development (R&D).

The Background
The Indian aerospace industry, both military and civil, stands uniquely poised today, on the threshold of catapulting itself into the global arena. Due to increasing support and involvement of the government in the demand and supply of defence and civil aerospace products, the industry has set itself on a firm path of transformational change. Industry players can look forward to take advantage of new opportunities in one of the fastest growing aerospace markets in the world, with key drivers being liberal investment policies in civil aviation and defence, a proactive defence offsets policy, a strong manufacturing and technology base, cost advantages, a well educated talent pool, global competitiveness in IT and an attractive special economic zones law. Comprising civil and defence segments, Indian aerospace industry is expected to become a hub for aviation MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhauling) facilities. India's MRO market is expected to cross the US$ 1b mark by end 2010. With domestic passenger traffic anticipated to surge 75% to 52 million by 2016-17. International air passenger traffic would reach 33 million. Related to these projections, India is expected to take delivery of more than 1000 aircraft by 2030, thereby emerging as one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. Such a development opens up a whole new world of opportunities for international and national aircraft companies in the MRO segment. The world's leading aircraft manufacturers are now eyeing India as a very attractive destination for setting up MRO facilities. The requirements in terms of aircraft and infrastructure in the military and civil sector provide an exciting opportunity for local and foreign companies. Market projections indicate that India would need commercial and military aircraft valued at $150b by 2030. The period ahead is thus a watershed for India to enter the global aerospace market and breathe new life into it.

The Objectives of the Conference are: Serious professional discussions and debate in the public arena to provide objectives inputs to government and industry managers in India and abroad. To help raise public consciousness and understanding of a crucial area of our defence and economic technological development in future. To explore the challenges, opportunities and strategies to energise Indian aerospace industry in the coming decades.
