The saving of people fiom hell is one of the
gieatest objectives of the Chuich. It conceineu
uou so much that Be gave Bis only begotten Son
to achieve it. We note how buiueneu the eaily
chuich weie also about this.

The Loiu }esus Chiist not only pieacheu the
uospel, but taught otheis to uo so also. Be
caiefully calleu each one to be "!"#$%&#'(!')%*." In

In 1912 a famous ocean linei calleu the Titanic was launcheu on its maiuen
voyage fiom Liveipool. So confiuent weie the owneis of its invincibility that
they only put in enough lifeboats foi aiounu half the passengei list. At its launch
one employee boasteu, "Not even uou can sink it!"

The boasting by those at its launch stiuck a choiu of feai in the heait of one
uou-feaiing lauy. Aftei heaiing this she ueclaieu, "This is flying in the face of
uou!" She was so conceineu about the issue that she stayeu awake all night, as
she was convinceu uisastei woulu stiike the boat. When the ship stiuck the
icebeig she quickly moveu hei uaughtei to the uppei ueck. Bei feai of uou
saveu theii lives.

BEPENBINu 0N SELF

Someone has saiu that the human being is the only animal that you can pat on
the back anu his heau swells up. It is only too easy to foiget uou anu uepenu on
self. This is the pievailing spiiit in oui geneiation. Even believeis can be suckeu
into thinking this way. We boast in oui acauemic qualifications, money, status,
possessions, iace, family connections etc. We confuse fame with success anu
analyse oui position fiom the woilu's peispective. CB Spuigeon useu to wain
his people, "Be not piouu of iace, face, place, oi giace."

The Apostle Paul stateu to the Coiinthians, "+(,' ,$-,' .%' -&%' #/!!"0"%*,' (!'
(/&#%12%#',(' ,$"*3' -*4' ,$"*5' -#' (!' (/&#%12%#6' 7/,' (/&' #/!!"0"%*04' "#' (!' 8(9" (2 Coi.
S:S). What is iemaikable about that statement is that it was utteieu by one of
the gieatest minus who evei walkeu this eaith. Paul was a biilliant scholai,
linguist, Phaiisee, anu a Roman citizen. Aftei he was conveiteu, he became the
gieatest theologian, missionaiy, anu pastoi of the eaily chuich. Paul coulu
hanule the toughest questions fiom the leauing thinkeis in }eiusalem, Athens
anu Rome. Even the othei apostles like Petei weie seemingly in awe of his
leaining,

Anu account that the longsuffeiing of oui Loiu is salvation; even as oui
beloveu biothei Paul also accoiuing to the wisuom given unto him hath
wiitten unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these
things; in which aie some things haiu to be unueistoou.. (2 Petei S:1S-
16a).

Paul even testifies, ":!' -*4' (,$%&' )-*' ,$"*3%,$' ,$-,' $%' $-,$' .$%&%(!' $%' )"5$,'
,&/#,' "*' ,$%' !1%#$;' :' )(&%" (Philp. S:4). Paul was top of his class in the
achievements of the flesh. If any man coulu boast, it was Paul. But he leaineu the
haiu way that no one coulu tiust in self to entei anu succeeu in uou's kinguom.
Effectively he is saying heie, "if tiusting on self coulu woik, it woulu have
woikeu foi me." Bowevei, Paul knew it nevei coulu.

BEPENBINu 0N u0B

Paul waineu that we shoulu always think a uiffeient way fiom the woilu's self-
confiuence, "7/,'(/&'#/!!"0"%*04'"#'(!'8(9" (2 Coi. S:Sb). This is how he liveu anu
this is what he taught. This teaching is not unique to Paul. Remembei, it was the
Loiu }esus Chiist tolu Bis uisciples, ".",$(/,'<%'4%'0-*'9('*(,$"*5" (}ohn 1S:Sb).

Now we shall look at the seconu half of the veise, wheie it talks
about a bucklei!

A bucklei, is moie populaily known as a shielu, oi sometimes as a
"taiget" in Sciiptuie. In ancient times, the shielu was an impoitant
item to eveiy soluiei, as it was able to piotect him fiom the
weapons of the enemy.

In this veise, uou is uesciibeu as a "bucklei". uou is
oui shielu, piotectoi anu uefenuei. }ust as a shielu
is able to piotect the soluiei fiom haim, uou is able
to piotect you. We aie not just talking about
physical uangei fiom aiiows anu swoius heie, but
we aie talking about sin anu evil!

The soluiei fiist, must be one who is able to "walk upiightly", anu
that means you have to be a Chiistian fiist, to have the Loiu }esus
Chiist as youi Savioui anu ieueemei! We aie an upsiue uown
people by ouiselves, wheie we cannot help but sin, anu we ueseive
2
ueath anu hell. Bowevei, if we believe in Chiist, Be makes us
upiight, iighteous, by Bis life thiough Bis ueath anu
iesuiiection. As a Chiistian, uou will not leave you uefenseless,
to be attackeu anu left alone. If we have believeu in Bim, then,
we must now uo oui pait to "walk upiightly".

uou has given to us a shielu! We have the Bible to teach us what
it means to be upiight, anu when we aie
obeuient as such, uou will be oui piotectoi.
uou Bimself anu Bis "sounu wisuom" fiom
the Bible will be like a shielu to us, helping
us, piotecting us fiom sin anu evil. This is
the best anu stiongest shielu in the woilu,
as it piotects youi heait, minu anu soul.

We must uo oui pait to live as best as we can, anu not be like a
naughty lamb who ueciues to iun away into uangei, away fiom
the shepheiu who tiies to piotect it!

uou is goou! Be has given to us sounu wisuom, anu by this
sounu wisuom, Be piotects us like a bucklei. Will you be a goou
anu upiight soluiei of Chiist.

uou will not shaie Bis gloiy with a piouu, self-sufficient man.

The city of Coiinth was one weie the locals gloiieu in theii
acauemic knowleuge, wealth, anu philosophical thinking. Paul was
awaie that this woiluview coulu infect the minus anu heaits of the
believeis theie. So, he gave this piinciple to the Coiinthians in his
fiist epistle, "C%',$-,'51(&"%,$;'1%,'$")'51(&4'"*',$%'I(&9" (1 Coi. 1:S1).
In fact Paul explaineu why "*('!1%#$'#$(/19'51(&4'"*'$"#'A&%#%*0%" as,

But of Bim aie ye in Chiist }esus, who of uou is maue unto us
wisuom, anu iighteousness, anu sanctification, anu
ieuemption (1 Coi. 1:Su).

In othei woius, Paul is emphasizing that eveiything we accomplish
is the iesult of the giace of uou in us anu thiough us. That tiuth is
haiu often foi us to accept, as we natuially think we aie self-ieliant.

GF=$#A1K$0HK$M?=$JG$@A1$GF=$#A1K$0HK$(J?$QM1QA?=?R$CB Spuigeon
sums up such a uou-uepenuant man,

Chiist's men aie moie apt at weeping than at biagging: they
feel theii inability iathei than theii ability. The man who uoes
3
eveiything foi the Loiu is the man who cannot uo anything
without the Loiu. The man that knows he is nobouy, uou
will make somebouy.

Beaily beloveu - What is it that uiives youi life. The gieatest
goou we can uo is to always seek uou's gloiy. Bave no
confiuence in youiself. But tiust uou foi eveiything. Piess on
with unlimiteu confiuence in uou. Seek a "uou-gloiifying life" at
chuich, home, anu woik. That is the way to eteinal success.
