Tricky Density Problems Student Version

The document presents a series of density-related word problems suitable for Grade 7 students, covering topics such as the density of mixed metals, identifying substances, buoyancy, and calculating volume and mass. Each problem encourages critical thinking and application of density concepts in practical scenarios. The problems range from determining if objects will float, calculating densities, and understanding the behavior of different materials.

Tricky Density Word Problems – Student Version (Grade 7)

1. 1. Mixed Metals Puzzle

A crown made of gold and silver weighs 500 grams. Its volume is 40 cm³. The density of
gold is 19.3 g/cm³, and silver is 10.5 g/cm³.
Can the crown be made of pure gold or silver? Explain.
2. 2. Mystery Substance
A student finds a cube with a mass of 540 grams and a side length of 6 cm.
Can you find its density and identify whether it's likely to be aluminum (2.7 g/cm³) or
copper (8.9 g/cm³)?
3. 3. Will It Float?
A block of wood has a volume of 120 cm³ and a mass of 96 grams.
Will it float or sink in water? (Density of water = 1 g/cm³)
4. 4. Hidden Volume
An object has a mass of 875 grams and a density of 7 g/cm³.
What is the volume of the object?
5. 5. Equal Volume, Different Mass
Two blocks – one of lead (density = 11.3 g/cm³) and one of iron (density = 7.9 g/cm³) –
have equal volumes of 100 cm³.
Which one is heavier and by how much?
6. 6. Ice vs Water
An ice cube has a density of 0.9 g/cm³ and a volume of 150 cm³.
What will be its mass? If it melts into water (density = 1 g/cm³), what will be the volume
of the water?
7. 7. Sinking Ship?
A plastic boat weighs 3000 grams and displaces 4500 cm³ of water when floating.
Will the boat float or sink?
8. 8. Break the Brick
A brick weighs 3.6 kg and has dimensions: 30 cm × 10 cm × 6 cm.
Find its density in g/cm³.
9. 9. Packing the Parcel
A metal box has an external volume of 1000 cm³. Inside, it is filled with a substance that
has a density of 1.2 g/cm³. If the substance weighs 1080 grams, what is the volume of
empty space (air) inside the box?
10. 10. Liquid Layers
You have three liquids:
- Liquid A: Density = 1.2 g/cm³
- Liquid B: Density = 0.8 g/cm³
- Liquid C: Density = 1.0 g/cm³
If poured into a glass, in what order will the liquids settle from bottom to top?
