Synapse (chemical signal)

-The neurotransmitter (acetycholine)

Sensory neurone (afferent neurone)

-Transmit impulse from receptor to the spinal cord/ interneurone (central nervous system). -Need myelin sheath to speed up the impulse transmission.

Receptor
-Pain receptor is stimulated by the pin prick and impulse (the electrical signal) is generated.

Candidate need to know

Differentiate between the sensory, relay & motor neurones Axon (long/short) Myelin sheath (present or absent) Location of cell body Impulse away or toward the cell body

-when the impulse reaches the synaptic knob, it triggers the synaptic vesicle to fuses with the pre-synaptic membrane and releases the neurotransmitter into synaptic cleft. -neurotransmitters bind to the receptor at postsynaptic membrane and trigger the new impulse at next neurone

Interneurone (CNS)
-Transmit impulse from sensory neurone to the motor neurone. -Process the information from the sensory neurone (no need myelin sheath, slower)

Effector (muscles) Motor neurone (efferent neurone)

-Transmit impulse from spinal cord/ interneurone (central nervous system) to the effector. -Need myelin sheath to speed up the impulse transmission. -Transmit impulse from receptor to the spinal cord/ interneurone (central nervous system).
