Introduction to Syntax

Syntax is the study of how words combine to form phrases, clauses, and sentences. It focuses on the
structure and rules governing sentence formation.

Key Concepts: - Word Order: English typically follows Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order. - Constituents:
Groups of words functioning as a single unit within a sentence (e.g., noun phrases). - Agreement:
Ensuring subjects and verbs agree in number and person. - Subordination & Coordination: Linking
clauses with subordinating conjunctions (because, although) or coordinating conjunctions (and, but).

Sentence Types: - Simple: One independent clause. - Compound: Two or more independent clauses. -
Complex: One independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. - Compound-Complex: A
combination of the above.

Importance: Syntax plays a crucial role in clarity, meaning, and style in both spoken and written
language.
