The self as a product of modern society among other construction

•It explores how society, social interactions, and culture shape and influence the view of

ourselves.

* What is Sociology?

-It is all about the human social life, social interactions within groups, societies, and the

broader world.

- It is the scientific study of :

1. Human Social Behavior

2. Patterns of Social Relationships

3. Social Interaction

Human Social Behavior- It encompasses any behavior in which one member or a person

affects another person.

-A major aspect of social behavior is “COMMUNICATION”

EXAMPLE:

1. Communicating through language (verbal) or body language (non verbal).

2. How people act differently in a crowd versus when they are alone or with close family.

Patterns of Social Relationships – The patterns or how individuals interact or connect with one

another.
Social Relationship Patterns:

- Friendships

- Professional Relationships

2. Nature of Social Interaction

- Exchange

- Cooperation

Social Interaction

- The process or way in which people behave and communicate with each other.

*George Herbert Mead and the Social Self

- An American philosopher, sociologist, and psychologist

- He was best known for: His attempt to show how the human self arises in the process of

“social interaction.”

- Mead's Social Self Theory : “The self is not innate but develops through social interactions.”

KEY CONCEPT:

The “I” – Is the part of the self that responds to situations based on “personal” desires and

reactions

The “Me” – Is the “socialized” aspect of the self, shaped by the attitudes and expectations of

others.
