Eco-friendly Christmas Charm

Winter is back with its white charm and so is the

excitement for the very last festival of the year. The
magical charm of Christmas is all about the food and
decorations. But the cost the environment pays for this
charm cannot be blindsided.
Every year tons of non-biodegradable waste is generated
from the Christmas decorations. So this year, let’s try to
reduce the waste and the carbon footprint by switching
to some sustainable decorating practices.

Christmas tree
 Potted trees: Instead by buying plastic trees, opt for
potted trees which can be planted after the festival
and will give year round happiness.
 Reusable tree: If buying plastic trees, consider buying
trees of high quality which can be reused for many
years.
 Cardboard trees: Trees can also be made from
cardboard, which is a fun and unique idea. You can
decorate them with lights and home-made hangings.
Eco-friendly wreaths
 Paper wreaths: Wreath can be made using rolls of
used paper/ papers from books not in use which can
be painted over or left as it is to make your
decorations as eco friendly as it gets.
 Pine-cone wreaths: Pine cone costs nothing and
cause no pollution. Using pine cone to make wreaths
is a win-win for everyone. It is pretty as well as
sustainable.
 Leaf wreaths: Leafs and flowers from one’s garden
can be used to make a pretty and colorful wreath.
Also herbs from the kitchen can be also used for this
purpose.
 Decorate your home plants: Decorating your home
plants instead of buying a Christmas tree is also a
good alternative. Which saves a lot of resources and
is sustainable.

Recycled garlands
 Recycled paper garlands: Garlands can be made
using material from old paper bags, old
cards ,magazines or any colorful sheets available and
strung into a rope.
 Paper chains: We can also make paper chains as we
used to do when we were kids using newspaper or
any other recycled paper.

Recycled tree ornaments

 Origami: Make origami stars, human shapes, trees
etc. to hang on your Christmas tree. These are
cheap, pretty and eco-friendly.
 Fabric scrap decorations: Fabrics scrapes can be
used to make balls attached to a string or chains to
cover the tree
 Cardboard snowflakes: Old cardboard can be used to
make snowflakes which can be decorated using
plant-bases glitters.
 Stick snowflakes: Snowflakes can also be made using
old lollipop or ice-cream sticks.

We should also try to save all these decorations for the

next year reduce the waste generated and keep on with
the eco-friendly celebrations. Try to find sustainable
alternatives to every piece of decoration so as to create a
better environment.
These practices add the festive charm while retaining the
core essence of the festival.
Merry Christmas!
