Celebrate the
HOLIDAYS
the Papertarian Way!
Greetings, Gatherings & Gifting

The holidays are the perfect time to

start living the papertarian life. Join
the movement and get a head start on
new habits that help you play an active
role in building a sustainable future.
By making the smart choice to use
paper, cardboard, and paper-based
materials—and recycling them the right
way—you can help ensure a healthy
future for our planet.

Holiday Wishes:
Papertarians know that receiving
a traditional paper card in the mail
is a much more personal way to
send your holiday greetings than a
digital message. It’s also a great way
to ensure that your message won’t
get lost in an overflowing inbox or
end up in a spam folder. And you
can create a clever display with the
cards you receive for pretty and
personalized holiday decor!

JOIN THE MOVEMENT! BE A PAPERTARIAN.

When you choose to be a papertarian you’re supporting the growth of America’s forests.
Purchasing paper goods helps create a healthy market for forest products, which in turn
encourages forest owners to plant more trees. And in the U.S., paper companies are
committed to working with private forest landowners to grow and protect forests and their
habitats. When we’re good to our forests, our forests are good to us. Go Papertarian!
Paper-Smart Celebrations
From planning to preparation to party time, paper products play
an important role in celebrating the holidays responsibly.

Baking Best
Practices:
Papertarians know that
everyday decisions have a big
impact on the environment.
Use parchment paper to line
cookie sheets for stick-free
sweets. Choose baking products
(like milk, eggs, butter, etc.) in
paper packaging.

Setting a
Sustainable Table:
Skip the good china for dinner
and save yourself valuable time
cleaning up by using decorative
paper plates and napkins. Create a
festive centerpiece using wrapping
paper and milk cartons. Remember,
these come from a renewable
resource, and when you use paper,
you help grow forests in the U.S.

a crafty little
Christmas
A few years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to make my
own holiday cards. I bought heavy kraft paper from Michaels, plus
embroidery thread in red and turquoise. My plan was to stitch the
words “happy holidays” on the front of each note—more than 50 in
total, for every one of my family members, friends, and colleagues.
I was halfway through my second card when I realized it would take
me until the following Christmas to get them all done.
I ended up ditching the needle and thread for holiday-themed
rubber stamps and gold ink—infinitely easier! And I came up with
some rules to make sure my card-crafting ambitions wouldn’t get
out of hand:

DODELL-FEDER: BEN GOLDSTEIN, HAIR/MAKEUP BY DEVRA KINERY AT RAY BROWN PRO

1. Whatever I make can only involve cutting and/or gluing.
No sewing, no painting, no weaving (despite how much I
love macrame).
2. I must be able to finish all the cards in a single weekend.
As we planned the DIY holiday card story on page 36, I kept my
rules in mind. Instead of fussy designs, we went for maximum
impact with minimum effort. You can make a big batch of these
at once, and everyone on your list will be wowed by your
thoughtfulness and creativity. Even better, you’ll have
plenty of time left to shop for gifts (page 49), wrap
them (page 108), and even host a festive feast
(page 31). Happy holidays!

CHRISTMAS
Put a fun spin on the usual red-and-
green palette by adding pink, purple,
and blue accents. Here we used a
multicolored ornament garland as a
centerpiece. The decorative charger
is like jewelry for a plain white plate,

Vellum Gifts
1. Cut strips of different-color vellum in varying
widths and lengths to mimic gift boxes, lids, and
a ribbon. Trim some of the strips at an angle so
they look less uniform.
2. Use a glue stick to glue the vellum boxes to the
card, spacing them a few centimeters apart, then
glue the lids on top so they slightly overlap the
boxes. Glue the “ribbon” vertically over the stack
and add a few smaller strips at the top for a bow.

Paint-Chip Wreath
1. Use a 5/8-inch circle punch to cut circles out of
green paint chips from a hardware store (or several
shades of green cardstock).
2. Glue the paint chips to the card in a circle with a
glue stick, overlapping them as you go.
3. Tie a thin piece of green ribbon into a bow and
hot-glue it to the top of the wreath.

1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray large

cookie sheet with cooking spray.
Separate dough into 5 rolls.
2 Place 1 roll in center of cookie
sheet. Unroll remaining 4 rolls
into long strips of dough. Loosely
coil each strip around roll,
cinnamon side in, forming giant

any cinnamon that falls off).

3 Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until

center is thoroughly baked and
edge is deep golden brown.
Cool 5 minutes.

4 Meanwhile, remove cover from

(50%) 15 seconds. Drizzle icing
over warm cinnamon roll. Cut
into 6 wedges; serve warm.
Washi Tape Trees
1. Draw three triangles of varying heights on
cardstock, then cut them out.
2. Apply strips of washi tape in shades of green,
blue, and yellow diagonally onto the triangles and
trim any excess.
3. Glue the triangles to the card with a glue stick
so they overlap, with the medium-size triangle in
the middle.
4. Use a small dab of craft or hot glue to attach a

or years Lizzy Pendleton’s husband,
Clay, tried to persuade her to move
from Houston, TX, to the mountains of
Colorado. “I kept telling him no way,
I don’t like cold weather—and I couldn’t ski!”
Lizzy says. But then Clay, a urologist, got a great
job offer in Steamboat Springs. Lizzy agreed to
try it for a year, and a decade later, the family
is still there. “I fell in love with the community,”
she says. The couple’s kids walk to school,
even in the snow (Lizzy does too; she’s a social
worker there), and they sled with neighbors
right out their back door. A recent renovation
transformed the 1970s house into a modern,
cozy family hangout. With the help of local firm
Rumor Designs, they chose neutral colors and
natural materials, which turned out to be the
perfect backdrop for the Pendletons’ colorful
Christmas decorations. “The holidays here are
so fun,” says Lizzy, who finally learned to love
winter sports. “We even ski on Christmas Day!”

“The goal was for this room to work
as well for quiet reading as it does for
family game night,” says Lizzy. The white

traffic. Come Christmas morning, the

The Pendletons bake a lot around the
holidays, so the team from Rumor Designs
planned plenty of counter space. The island
is topped with black granite; the rest of
the counters are Taj Mahal quartzite. Lizzy

Clé and white oak cabinets from Cabinetry
by Karman to give the space a more rustic
feel. The barstools are from Wisteria.

Pearl, the family’s golden retriever, agrees:
“She rules the roost and loves this spot so

Visual Comfort & Co.

all grown up
nyone might feel the
itch to move after
living in the same
home for 20
years, but for designer and mom of
five Saudah Saleem, the urge came
on especially strong in early 2020.
“We’d outgrown our townhouse
physically, even with my oldest,
Jasirah, getting ready to move out,
and I’d outgrown it from a design
perspective. I’d done all the projects
I could do there,” says Saudah.
Looking for a fresh start and a
bigger yard, the family moved into
a 100-year-old home not far from
their old place in Baltimore, MD,
that had been flipped by a builder.
Saudah started personalizing every
room, her creativity fueled by new
blank spaces to decorate. “When
my kids were younger, I leaned into
more playful colors and choices.
These days, things look a little more
sophisticated, but we still have fun!”

LIVING ROOM
Saudah decorated this space with blues and
greens, including a performance velvet sofa from
Anthropologie, which she chose for its shape.
“I like the coziness that the curve creates,” she
says. The swivel chairs are from Kirkland’s Home,
and the stools are from Burke Decor. They come
in handy as extra seating but easily tuck away
when the kids aren’t home.

had a huge impact.

feeling like we’re on top of one another,” says

DINING ROOM
Saudah scored this burlwood table secondhand for
just $300 and paired it with acrylic chairs that she
has had for years. “Those chairs are my tried-and-
true because they are so easy to clean, and I love
how you can see the table through them,” she says.
71 HGTV Magazine

BATHROOM
The kids share this bathroom, so Saudah gave
everyone a say on the wallpaper. They agreed on
this zebra pattern from The Inside. “I love that it’s
peel-and-stick, so I can remove it if we ever want to
switch it up,” says Saudah. She replaced the existing
cherrywood vanity with a navy one from Lowe’s to
make the space feel more custom.
MAIN BEDROOM
After making sure everyone else was comfortable
with their rooms, Saudah got to work on her own.
“I was going for an elegant hotel retreat,” she says.
She chose sculptural sconces from Alora Lighting,
a bed with a tall tufted headboard from Saatva,
and wide nightstands from an estate sale.

SAMORI AND
ZARIA’S BEDROOM
The two youngest kids share a room, and making
it look gender-neutral was the goal, says Saudah.
She paired terra-cotta walls with a sleek white
bunk from The Home Depot and blue and black
accents. “This color scheme makes the room feel OFFICE
like something they can grow into,” she says. This bonus space in the basement quickly took
shape as a homework area. Saudah spruced it up
with wallpaper from Spoonflower, blue desks from
Wayfair, and faux-leather chairs from Poly & Bark.
“Samori and Zaria are at the desks all the time!”

BEDROOM
This was the first room that
19-year-old Saleh, a college
sophomore, didn’t have to share
with a sibling. “I wanted him
to have a room he can come
home to and not feel like he’s in
a kid space,” Saudah says. She
chose black faux-grasscloth
wallpaper from Tempaper & Co.
and a leather West Elm bed. The
astronaut art is by DAAS.

L ouisville is known for a lot of things: world-renowned bourbon distilleries,

the Kentucky Derby, iconic baseball bats—and now the 2023 HGTV
Urban Oasis. This year’s house, which will be given away in an epic
sweepstakes, is a fully rebuilt and restored 1925 Craftsman, just a four-
minute drive from the city’s trendy NuLu neighborhood. “It’s the hippest area
of downtown, so we added some youthful flair,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.
For the exterior, he chose James Hardie shingles in a smoky blue and painted
the door Midday by Sherwin-Williams, then he filled the inside with vintage finds
and cheeky prints. Turn the page to see more!

Brian covered all the walls in glossy ceramic squares.
“Everyone thinks it’s wallpaper!” he says. “We used
basic tile, but the two colors and checkered pattern
make it look high-end.” He painted the cabinets to
match the exterior of the house. The stools are from
Wayfair, and the pendant lights are by Hunter.

casual sitting area. “It’s a great place to
watch the Derby from home,” says Brian,
who created a gallery wall to camouflage
the TV. He scored the vintage chairs
at a flea market and covered them in
plaid wool from Wayfair. The custom
wallpaper, by Ashley Bothwell, features
the architectural plans for a distillery.

As a nod to the home’s age—it

chose ceramic tiles in a custom

them of tin. “They connect the

of our older home,” says Pam.

“When we met Diana, she told us she doesn’t
do white kitchens, and we loved that about
her,” says Pam. The designer suggested pale
gray for the upper cabinets (Modern Gray by
Sherwin-Williams) and green for the lowers
(Rosemary by Sherwin-Williams), a color they
repeated on the floor.

By choosing paper products, you’re taking a
sustainable path forward that also gives back.
When you use paper products, you’re doing your part to help the planet. Because the paper, packaging and
boxes you rely on every day can be recycled up to 7 times. In fact, paper is one of the most recycled materials
in the U.S., and it comes from a natural and renewable resource—trees. Choosing paper products encourages
America’s private forest landowners to grow and maintain healthy forests at a rate nearly double the volume
needed to make the products you rely on every day. And that’s something we can all feel good about.
