Survey Planning
Survey Planning
ENVIRONMENT:
• The production logging environment is very different from that of open hole logging.
 Firstly in place there is normally a completion, which can take many forms.
 The reservoir zone may be open hole, perforated casing or gravel pack.
 The log is normally run in dynamic conditions, with mixtures of liquids and
gases.

• Other constraints:
 A common constraint on offshore platforms.
 In horizontal wells the use of a wire line tractor.
 Production log required on a well completed with a subsea Christmas tree.
Survey Planning

OBJECTIVES:
 Monitoring well performance.
 Evaluation of completion performance.
 Well problem diagnosis.

PROGRAM:
1. The down hole expected injection or production rates (approximate

calculation of expected spinner response, and estimate tool responses).

2. The number of phases or fluid types expected.

3. The well status.

Survey Planning

PROGRAM:
Discuss Logging Program:

• Why is survey being run ?

• Objectives of the survey.

• Any other operations (eg. Work over or logging) linked to the present job ?

• Who in the client organization will take decisions ?

• when are final results to be presented ?

• Expected job start date.

Survey Planning
PROGRAM:
Pre-Job:
• Wellhead pressure.
• Expected GOR.
• Expected flow rates, BHP and BHT.
• Acid, H2S, CO2 content & Hydrates possibility.
• Well deviation.
• Know the completion string.
• Minimum restrictions.
• Distance from tubing shoe to top perforation.
• Distance from bottom perforation to total depth.
• Well head connection type.
Survey Planning
PROGRAM:
Pre-Job:
• Well Sketch With:
 Perforation details.
 Deviation.
 Casing sizes & weights.
 Completion string depths & sizes.
• Tool Sketch With:
 Tool lengths & ODs.
 Tool measure points.
 Accessories description & positions.
 Tool string weights.
 Spinner type and cage size.
Survey Planning
PROGRAM:
By well Status:

• Flowing Survey.
• Shut-in Survey.

Running The Job:

Your knowledge can make the difference

between a good survey and a great survey.
Survey Planning

After Job (Interpretation):

• Correlation log identified.
• Production and pressure data.
• PVT data.
• Log objectives/purposes of survey.
• Summary of log technique/method.
• Sequence of events and record of files.
• Comments on unusual or anomalous responses.
• Note of any events affecting interpretation.
• Summary of results.
