Fatherhood
Week 1: God's purpose for the family
INTRODUCTION: We are starting an amazing series about the family, these presentations are based on some
adaptations in the 9 Marks Seminar on fatherhood.
I. IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY
What importance do we give to the family.
A. Everyday things, because they are so obvious, we do not appreciate them: water, the air we breathe.
B. As someone expressed it: 'Seeing what is visible before us is a constant struggle.'
C. This can happen with the family: Today we will see that the family is a hidden treasure in plain sight.
II. WHAT IS GOD'S VISION FOR THE FAMILY?
Obviously, we cannot address all of God's purposes for the family in a single sermon.
The Bible teaches us that God's main purpose for humanity through the family is nothing.
less than present and communicate to the world three important images:
2.1. The Personality of God.
2.2. The power of the gospel within the home.
2.3. The church as a community of families whose lives have been transformed by God.
TODAY WE WILL SEE THE FAMILY AS AN IMAGE OF THE PERSONALITY OF GOD
II. BUT, WHAT IS THE WORLD'S VIEW OF THE FAMILY?
THREE DANGERS ATTACK THE FAMILY AND HAVE TO DO WITH THE CHILDREN:
A. IDOLS: We love them so much that they become symbols of our fulfillment.
B. TOOLS: we educate them thinking about our future and we get frustrated when they do not fit in our
planes.
C. OBSTACLES: We see them as something that can oppose our success: a career, prestige, our
freedom. Something that is excess in our luggage.
NOTE: But wait a moment, they did not ask to come into the world, we bring them.
III. IF THERE IS A VISION OF GOD FOR THE FAMILY, WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
The Bible is the book of God, so it shows us the design for the family.
1. The connection of marriage and having children: God gives a suitable helper to the first man (Adam): Eve.
The first commandment for the family: be fruitful and multiply (Gen. 1:28). Have children!
And this was not simply a decree given before the Fall. God says the same to Noah after the flood:
But you be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply in it.
NOTE: Some people cannot have children naturally, but there are other alternatives. Others remain
Singles and others can have them. Having children is a blessing.
IV. WHY DOES GOD ALLOW HUMANS TO REPRODUCE?
1. The answer is found when we consider that he created Adam and Eve in his image (Gen. 1:26-27). He
wants the bearers of his image to multiply because he wants his image to be spread everywhere
world.
2. Importance of the family in the history of salvation: We see this more immediately in the family of
Abraham,—whose family—God used to show us His plan of salvation for the nations (Gen. 26:4; cf.
Galatians 3:29; 4:6-7
3. We see this in the New Testament, especially when Paul shows how husbands and wives
are likened to Christ and the church (Eph. 5:22-23).
V. BUT, WHAT ABOUT SIN? HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE FAMILY?
Before we consider these family portraits, allow me to give a brief (but important) reflection about
of how we should view these beautiful portraits in light of the effects of sin on the family:
1. Satan and the culture ruin the family and its ability to reflect God. Someone might think: 'My family
It could be a portrait of something, but not of God, the gospel, or the church!
Our bad experiences tell us that something is wrong, that the family needs an adjustment regarding it.
what God demands.
3. The KEY: Don't think of those images as unattainable, but embrace them and pursue them with the help of
GOD. That is why we love the gospel because it helps us see them. Trust in the power that God has to
to transform our family and give it a different view of life through the power of the gospel.
VI. THE FAMILY AS AN IMAGE OF THE PERSONALITY OF GOD
When God wants to do something in society, He thinks of and uses the family. And your family can be that family that...
God wants to use and bless:
A. The family presents an image of God Himself because it is the likeness of parent-child relationships.
HOW THE FATHER GOD RELATES TO HIS SON JESUS.
• Now, this is not a complete similarity because the relationship between the Heavenly Father and the Son is unique.
For example, the Son was eternally begotten, not created in time, unlike human children.
BUT IT PRESENTS A MODEL OF RELATIONSHIPS MARKED BY MUTUAL AFFECTION:
O God the Father, twice from heaven, spoke audibly and declared Jesus as his beloved son (Mt.
3:17; 17:5.
JESUS said: 'Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me' (John 14:11).
B. AN IMPORTANT LESSON: Our love for, unity with, and likeness to our children gives
testimony of the PERSON of God.
• What an immense privilege it is to have children! It is no wonder that God has commanded us to be
be fruitful and multiply.
• Consider the enormous implications for our church and our families when we understand that God intends
reflect his image in part through the relationships between parents and children:
1. It prevents us from seeing children as obstacles: Children are not obstacles to the ministry; their very
Presence is a school for ministry.
2. It prevents us from seeing children as idols: we feel the temptation to worship our children. Fathers and mothers,
or even single parents, who place their children on pedestals, need to remember that God did not impregnate the
families with the divine image to worship it, but so that we can worship Him through the family.
Let us build our homes as means to glorify God!
3. It prevents us from seeing children as tools: They are not the means to achieve our plans, but
so that they can achieve the plans that God has for them.
4. It prevents us from overlooking the children. Without a correct and biblical understanding of the role of children, many
we simply underestimate them. If we are single, we see them as a responsibility of
someone else or how irrelevant to our life.
CONCLUSION: WHY IS IT SO EASY FOR US TO DEVELOP A VISION
DISTORTED FAMILY OR OVERLOOKING IT?
We fail to see children and families in light of what God says in His Word about the family.
2. But as we have already seen, that should not be the case, THE CHALLENGE IS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE
WHAT THE BIBLE HAS TO SAY ABOUT FAMILY.
3. LET US PRAY.
