TASK
Your school wants to encourage birds to visit the compound. Your group is tasked with designing
and making a simple bird feeder using recycled or locally available materials.
1. As a group, design a simple bird feeder. Make a freehand pictorial sketch to show how the
bird feeder will look like and indicate the main measurements or proportions.
(6 marks)
2. Choose and list the locally available or recycled materials you will use for making the bird
feeder (e.g., plastic bottles, wood scraps, coconut shells, string, etc.). Explain why you
chose these materials.

MARKING SCHEME
GENERAL INFORMATION
Duration: 1 Week
Product: A simple bird feeder made from locally available or recycled materials.
Assessment: Learners work in groups, but each candidate records individual notes and
reflections.
Skills tested: Design, creativity, marking out, cutting, assembling, documentation,
ICT, and environmental awareness.
EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS AND TOOLS
A. Materials (locally available/recycled, choose at least 2–3 types)
1. Plastic bottles – lightweight, recyclable, easy to cut and weatherproof.
2. Wood offcuts – durable, strong, eco-friendly.
3. Coconut shells / tin cans – biodegradable or reusable.
4. String/wire – for hanging feeder.
5. Strong adhesive/glue – for joining parts.
6. Birdseed/grains – to test functionality.
B. Tools
Tape measure/Steel rule – for accurate measurements.
Marker pen/pencil – for marking cutting lines.
Scissors / craft knife / blade – for cutting plastic, cardboard, or tin.
Drill / Awl – for making holes.
Saw – if using wooden parts.
Glue gun / strong adhesive – for joining.
Sandpaper – for smoothing edges (safety).
PROCEDURES (TEACHER GUIDANCE)
1. Designing the Feeder
Pretechnical Studies pp2 End term Examination KJSEA PREDICTION SERIES Term 3 2025
Guide learners to sketch a simple design (e.g., bottle feeder with openings at the
sides and a perch).
Ensure measurements are realistic (10–20 cm length, 5–10 cm diameter).
2. Selection of Materials
Learners justify choice (e.g., “Plastic bottle because it is light and recyclable”).
Teacher ensures safety in material selection (avoid sharp rusty tins without
smoothing).
3. Marking Out
Learners measure and mark feeding holes, hanging points, and perches.
Encourage neatness and proportion.
4. Cutting and Shaping
Teacher supervises safe handling of scissors/knives.
Learners cut out holes, slots, and edges.
5. Joining and Assembling
Attach perches (wooden sticks, spoons, twigs).
Fix hanging string/wire.
Ensure feeder is stable, strong, and seed-holding.
6. Testing
Put birdseed inside and check if it holds.
Hang outside (e.g., tree branch or pole).
7. Documentation
Learners take photos/videos of each stage.
Compile in electronic portfolio (PowerPoint, Google Docs, or PDF).
8. Reflection
Learners write notes on importance of bird feeders in the school compound.
