FEED THE BIRDS

Introduction
Our class has just planted a garden outside and now we
want to attract some birds! In Science we have made
birdfeed... but we have nowhere to put it! We need your
help to create a birdfeeder to hold your birdseed and
attract lots of beautiful birds to our garden.

Brief
Your task is to work in groups of three (3) to create a bird
feeder using recycled materials from the classroom and
home.

Generating Designs

Each member of your group is responsible for designing

one (1) bird feeder. You must:
-Draw a sketch of your bird feeder
-Label your sketch to show your bird feeders features
-Label any materials that you are using.

You will evaluate the designs as a group to choose the best

design to build. You might like different parts of each
design and decide to draw a new sketch that combines
them!

Project Specifications/Success
Criteria
Your birdfeeder must:
Be made mostly using recycled materials.
Be able to hang from a tree on its own
Hold at least 1 cup of bird seed.

Project Management

Students will create their bird feeders over a period of 5

lessons in Design and Technology. Students will build the
birdfeeder together but will each have their own role from
the following: Project Manager, Safety Advisor and
Materials/Wastage Monitor.

Lesson One: Research

As a whole class, we will discuss the basic needs of birds
(food, water, shelter) and brainstorm features that bird
feeders could have and materials they could be made from.
Lesson Two: Designing
Students will have generated three designs and selected
one to build by the end of this lesson.
Lesson Three and Four: Building
Students will have two lessons to construct their bird
feeders. It is expected that they will finish before the end of
lesson 4. Early finishers may decorate their bird feeders.
Lesson 5: Evaluate
Students share their creations with their classmates and
reflect on their work.

Presentation
Students will have the opportunities to present their bird
feeders to their families at a morning tea and will explain
how they made their bird feeders and the reasons behind
their decisions.
