INTRODUCTION
HELP! HELP!
Your strawberry seeds are in big trouble! Some scary birds such as parrots, cockatoos and
finches are eating all of your strawberries! It is up to you year 4's to save them because without
our strawberries we won’t be able to eat! The world is in your hand’s
year 4s. You are our only hope…

PROJECT BRIEF
SPECIFICATIONS You are going to design and construct a bird
proof shelter to protect your strawberries from
the birds.
- You will be designing the bird proof
shelter individually and with your
group. 
- You MUST use recycled materials to
RECYCLED
MATERIALS
create your model of your bird proof
shelter.
- The bird proof shelters must have a
hook to hang up in the tree above the
planting of your groups strawberry
seeds.
- You will have Mrs Smith (educative
assistant) and Miss Booth (classroom
teacher) and a parent helper to
help with creating your design, during
the cutting of wood and the hot glue
gun.

Lesson 1: Introduced to
design brief and
introduced to plants.
Lesson 2: Drawing the
design.
Lesson 3: Making design.
Lesson 4: Making design.
Lesson 5: Presentation.
Lesson 6: Evaluating.
PRESENTATION
In your groups you will be
presenting your design to another
group of students. As part of your
presentation of your design you
are to sell your product to them as
to why your bird proof shelter is
the best. You will then swap with
the other group and they will
present their design. You will be
peer assessing each other.
PROJECT
MANGEMENT
Step 1: To begin your project you are going to be
learning about your flowering plant (strawberries) and the
life cycle of it. You will be learning about the birds that
attack the strawberry plants and why it is important to
protect your flowering plant from them.
Step 2: Students will be introduced to some ideas of how
to protect their individual strawberry such as nets and
shelters. A range of different recycled materials will be
introduced in this lesson.
Step 3: As a group you will be brainstorming recycled
materials with your group for the bird proof shelter. You
will then individually be sketching, planning and labelling
your bird proof shelter and the share your design with
your group. You will discuss with your groups which
design is the most effective and draw a design together
on A3 piece of paper.
Step 4: You will be making your bird proof shelter using
the group design you created. You will have help from a
parent helper as well as help from Miss Booth.
EVALUATION
- Testing the design by placing the
shelter above the strawberry seed.
- checking the durability each week.
- whether it can stay on its own.
- Taking a photo of bird proof shelter
individually and doing a self reflection
after making bird shelter.
- Reflect on it after the first week and
second week of it being hung up int
the tree.
