Set-up Cage Equipment
(Prepare bedding based on housing equipment housing design)
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the nature of Organic Agriculture. The scope of this module permits it
to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. perform the proper preparations and installation of beddings based on
housing equipment and design;
2. prepare beddings intended for chicks;
3. describe the different bedding materials.

SET-UP CAGE
1 EQUIPMENT
In this module, the step-by-step process of preparing and installing bedding
materials for poultry I discussed. Many of these bedding materials are readily
available in te community and even in respective houses. Exploring those local
materials is fun and enjoyable. Prepare and be amazed in this fun-filled learning.

What’s New

Prepare bedding based on housing equipment and housing design

Bedding is an important part of keeping your chickens happy and healthy.
On the chicken floor the bedding will provide a soft surface for your chickens to
walk on and will absorb droppings and odor. You want your chicken sanitary and
sweet-smelling. In the nest, bedding will give freshly-laid eggs a soft landing so they
don't crack. (A cracked egg is a spoiled egg.)

Bedding material serves a number of important functions. For example, it:

• absorbs excess moisture from the droppings and drinkers and promotes
drying by increasing the surface area of the house floor;
• dilutes fecal material, thus reducing contact between birds and manure; and
• insulates chicks from the cooling effects of the ground and provides a
protective cushion between the birds and the floor.

An effective bedding material must be absorbent, lightweight, inexpensive

and non-toxic. Ideal materials will have high moisture absorption and release
qualities to minimize litter caking. In addition, a bedding material must be
compatible as a fertilizer or soil amendment after it has served its purpose in the
broiler house.

Two of the most common beddings materials are pine shavings and straw.
⚫ Pine shavings
⚫ Straw

For pine, larger flaked shavings are recommended because they create less
dust and allow for quick scooping of waste. Cedar shavings are not recommended
because the scent can be overpowering and even toxic, especially to chicks.
Straw is one of the best materials for bedding. It has the same advantages of
pine shavings and provides something for chickens to scratch and peck through.
Either of these materials can be found at your local feed or farm supply store.

Steps/Procedure in preparing available bedding materials

1. Wear Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment
worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and
illnesses.

2. Apply good working and safety habits

Observe safety precautions at all times including wearing of suitable PPEs
while working. Appropriate field practices and proper equipment use and
maintenance is advised. Safety is the top priority.

4
3. Collect available bedding materials (rice hulls, straw and hay, shredded paper or
saw dust) using sack, shovel or wheel barrow.

4. Install bedding based on housing equipment housing design inside the rearing
house.

5. Scatter beddings and arrange appropriate to housing design.
