and disassembling fixtures inside and outside
the farmhouse.

Power tools

Equipment used in Pig Farms

Farm equipment is any kind of machinery used on a farm to help with farming. The
following are examples of equipment used in pig farms with illustration.

Heat Lamps

If you plan to farrow sows, a supplemental source of heat is critical for

baby pigs. Heat lamps can be strung along the sides of farrowing crates or
in hovers where only the piglets have access. Raise or lower the heat lamp
bulb until piglets lie under the light without lying on top of each other.

6
Medication storage
Some medications and nearly all vaccines must be refrigerated, or they
quickly lose effectiveness. You will need access to a refrigerator for medication
and vaccine storage. (Do not forget to make sure the temperature is set
correctly!) Other medications should be stored in a secure location.

Feed scale
At times it is useful to know exactly how much feed pigs are being fed.
Gestating sows, for example, are often limit-fed to help control body condition.
A feed scale aids in measuring feed in pounds rather than scoops or buckets.

7
Power washer
A power washer removes manure and dirt from facilities. Pre-soaking the area
for several hours prior to power washing increases the ease of manure
removal.

Watering system
Like all livestock, pigs need clean, fresh water 365 days a year. You can choose
to hand water pigs several times per day or you can install one of several types
of automatic waterers. The most common type is a nipple that dispenses water
when the pig presses its snout to a moveable spout. With these system
spillages can be reduced with up to 40% or more. The installation of bite ball
valves will lower spillage and therefore pay for itself in a short time.

Feed storage/bin
Feed should be stored in a clean, dry area protected from vermin. Mice and
rats can consume quite a bit of valuable feed and contaminate even more.
Feed should not be stored with chemicals, solvents, gasoline, or other
materials that would be toxic to pigs.

8
Maintenance Procedures of Tools

HAND TOOLS
Hand tools such as screw drivers, wrenches, hammers, pliers, levels, and wire
cutters are examples of common tools found in the farm that are often left out
in anywhere after using. Tools are tough, but they are not indestructible and
exposure to the elements can take its toll.

Below are some tips on how to take care of your tools and store them so that
you get optimum use of them.

1. Make it a habit to clean tools after use before each you return them to
storage.
2. Wipe them down with rag or old towel and be sure they are free from dust,
grease, and debris before you put them to their proper places.
3. Check your tools. Look for damage and defects like loose handles, breaks,
cracks. Make sure it has no sign of corrosion or rust.
4. If your tools already show signs of rust, apply Rust Remover. You can also
try spraying tools with WD-40® and then scrubbing them with steel wool or a
stiff wire brush.
5. Afterwards, wash them with warm, soapy water and scrub them again with
a cloth or rag until all signs of rust are gone.
6. Then dry them thoroughly with a clean, dry rag.
7. Apply a light coat of WD-40® and wipe away excess oil before storing.
8. Repair or replace any tool that show signs of damage.

POWER TOOLS
Power tools such as electric drills, saws, sanders and nailers need routine
maintenance just like your hand tools. Because of their mechanical and
electrical parts, power tools are more susceptible to problems caused by poor
maintenance, dust and debris accumulation and general malfunction. The
following are some helpful tips on how to clean and properly store your tools.

1. KEEP YOUR TOOLS CLEAN.

Dust and grime can bring you power tools to a grinding halt if left unchecked
overtime. Wipe them clean with a rag after every job has been completed and
then store them. Deep clean periodically by using damp cloth after every job.
Get into exhaust and intakes and other hard-to-clean areas with lightly oiled
cotton swabs or other slender tools.

2. STORE POWER TOOLS CORRECTLY.

Keep your power tools protected from dust, moisture, and other adverse
conditions by storing them properly after use. Keep them in their original
cases if possible or tuck them away in storage drawers or tool chests,
preferably in a garage or basement with a moderately controlled climate. This
not only protects them, it also keeps them organized so you can easily find
the tool you need when you need it.

9
Helpful Tip:

Remember to keep instruction manuals for all of your tools. They are
provided to you by the manufacturer so that you can safely and competently
operate your tools. They’ll also have valuable information on how to care for
the tool, find replacement parts and other important pieces of information.
Store manuals either in a toolbox drawer or a cabinet in your
workspace/storage area so that they are readily available.

3. INSPECT FOR WEAR AND DAMAGE

Periodically inspect power tools for any signs of wear or damage. Pay special
attention to power cords. If you see frayed insulation or exposed wires, have
the cord repaired or replaced immediately by a professional, unless you have
the expertise to do it yourself. Damaged power cords can potentially lead to
injury from electric shock or can cause a fire. Also, check the cord’s prongs to
see if they are bent or loose. If any are, repair or replace.

Safety Alert!

Always unplug electric tools when cleaning them or making any repairs to
avoid the danger of electric shock. It is also a good practice to unplug them
when not in use.

4. LUBRICATE MOVING PARTS

Keep moving parts lubricated for premium performance. Not only does it keep
the mechanics of a tool running smoothly, it also decreases the chance of rust
developing. While common machine oil is a good choice, consult your owner’s
manual to see if the manufacturer recommends or requires a specific type of
oil.

5. KEEP BATTERIES IN SHAPE.

Cordless, battery-powered tools are convenient and portable and have become
very popular for contractors and homeowners alike. To keep them running
efficiently and effectively, it is essential for their batteries to be maintained.

Batteries remain working at peak level by fully charging and then fully
discharging their power once every couple of weeks. Don’t let batteries sit
unused for extended periods of time. Try to use batteries once every two weeks.

Care for batteries by cleaning contacts with cotton swabs and alcohol. Store
batteries you will not be using for a while in a dry, clean place away from
excessive heat.

Follow these general steps and your tools should last for years.

What I Can Do
Activity # 2

Construct an Automatic Hog Waterer (AHW).

Hogs are very much dependent on water. Some vital functions of water
include temperature regulation, transport of nutrients and waste, a multitude
of metabolic processes, and lubrication throughout the body. To ensure
constant supply of water to these animals when they need it anytime of the

11
day, it is wise to provide them with watering stations through an Automatic
Hog Waterer (AHW). The ratio is 1 watering stations for every 2-3 hogs.
A. Materials needed:

- Brass Drain x 2 ($5.47/ea at Home Depot)

- Ball Valve x 2 ($8.86/ea at Home Depot)
- Hose Barb x 4 ($3.12/ea at Home Depot)
- Bag of hose clamps ($7.86/bag of ten at Home Depot)
- Pig nipple x 2 (approx $5/ea at local ranch store)
- Elbow adapter x 2 (approx $1/ea at local ranch store)
- Float valve ($15 on Amazon)
- 55 gallon water barrel with open lid ($25 at local survival/prep store)*
- Garden Hose ($19/ea at local hardware store)
- Various adapters to fit hoses (depends on the adapter and materials )

B. Tools:

- Drill
- Dremel or other rotary tool
- Crescent wrenches

C. Procedure
STEP 1: Gather all the materials.

12
Materials should be prepared before you start so that each operation would
run smooth and finish the project on time

STEP 2: Add output ports

13
Drill holes in the bottom of the barrel for output ports. This is where the water
will flow to the pigs.

14
Use a 3/8" drill bit to get the hole started then follow it up with a Dremel tool
to slowly enlarge the hole until it was just big enough to thread the drain
ports into the barrel. Once the drain ports were threaded into the barrel, add
the nut that helps to squeeze the drain port to the side of the barrel. The drain
ports also came with a rubber washer, which should go on the inside of the
barrel to help make the hole watertight. Put drain holes. (It should be at the
same height unlike what is seen in the picture).

STEP 3: Add Hoses

Now that you have your drain ports installed, it's time to install the hoses that
will carry the water to the pig nipples.

Simple version:
Just screw the hose to the drain port.

Higher functionality:
Measure about 6"-8" from the female end of the hose and cut the hose into

15
two pieces there. You will use two hose barbs for these next couple steps.
Insert a hose barb into the shorter section of hose, making sure to really push
the barbed end into the hose. Use a hose clamp to really squeeze it down to
make sure there aren't any leaks. Most hose clamps can be tightened using a
socket, which is significantly easier than using a screwdriver, which is also
an option. After you have the barb clamped down, cover the threaded male
end with Teflon tape to doubly ensure against leakages. Then screw the
threaded end into your ball valve.

Use a couple crescent wrenches to help get the connection good and tight.

Get another hose barb and insert it into the long length of hose, following the
same steps insert this end into the other end of the ball valve, completing the
connection.

Your hose is ready to go! Adding the ball valve, while not essential, really helps
add additional functionality to your hose. You will never know when you might
need to turn it off. It is not a difficult thing to do and, the benefits of doing it
far outweigh the time/effort it takes.

Repeat this step for each output you have.

STEP 4: Input/float valve

Now that your outputs are ready, you need to get the water into your barrel.

Following the same process for drilling output holes, drill a small hole for your
input. Again, drill a hole and then careful expand it, being careful not to make
it too large.

Dremeled the hole to the right size, then thread the male end of the float valve
through the hole.

STEP 5: Attach the pig nipple to the hose.

16
Run the hose vertically down to the nipple using a couple of elbow adapters
that would allow the hose to be vertical and the nipple to be horizontal.

Wrap the threaded end of the nipple in Teflon tape and thread it into the elbow
adapter. Thread the elbow adapter into the female/female adapter and then
attach to the hose.

STEP 6: Add vent/overfill valve

Because the lid seals and the water comes and goes through sealed valves, it
might be important to add an air vent to maintain normal pressure within the
barrel. It could serve as an overflow as well in the event the float valve failed,
and water filled continually without stopping.

Use a fine mesh to prevent bugs and dirt getting in.

Cut a small square of the mesh and attached it to the vent with a zip tie. Then
drill a small hole near the very top of the barrel (above the float valve) and
jammed the barbed end in.

STEP 7: Mount the Barrel

17
Elevate the barrel to take advantage of gravity. Raise the bottom of the barrel
at about six feet off the ground. Mount a stand using two 4x4s to assist in the
support of the weight (the full barrel will weigh 550+ pounds)

STEP 8: Watering Station

Pulled the hoses to their full length such that there would not be a loop for
the water to flow through. This determined where the station would be placed.
Drove one T-post and placed a pallet over it. Then marked where the second
T-post should be driven such that by placing the pallet over there would be a
bit of tension to help hold it still. Drove the second T-post opposite the first
and then placed the pallet down over both. Secure the pallet to the posts with
fencing wire. Then drape the hoses over the pallet and secured the nipples
and hoses with the same fencing wire.
