2
Looking Back

Matter is everywhere in the environment. In the past lesson, you have learned
that matter undergo changes. There are two changes in matter: physical change and
chemical change. In physical change the atoms present in the molecules do not
change and it is easy to bring back the material to its original form. In Chemical
change the properties of the substance are changed and new substances are
formed and the materials cannot be brought back to their original form. Let’s have a
simple activity to refresh your mind.

Visual Thinking Approach: Physical Change or Chemical Change

Directions: Can you tell what is being done and what changes occur in each
picture? Write your answer on your science notebook.

1. _ 2. 3.

4. _ 5. 6.

Congratulations! You still remember that lesson. There are a lot of factors that cause
matter to undergo changes.

3
Brief Introduction
There are many ways or techniques to
minimize waste of useful and valuable materials.
We can design product out of local, recyclable
materials in making useful products. We can save our planet
Earth from piles of garbage that cause pollution if we know how
to manage the waste of useful materials.
Materials such as magazine, newspapers, bottles,
containers, wrappers, snack packages and the likes are only few recyclable
materials that can be used again. We can make money from selling waste materials
and we have benefits in practicing the zero waste management on living things and
non-living things.
Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible
production, packaging, consumption, reuse, and recovery of all products, , and waste
materials without burning them, and without discharges to land, water, or air that
threaten the environment or human health.

You will be doing all activities with a partner. Ask your parents to monitor your work.

Activities (Week 5)

Activity 1.1 “WHAT I’M GONNA DO?” (day 1)

Objective: Identify the 5R’s components of proper waste management

Materials: Any materials discarded/unwanted materials found
inside the house.
Procedure:
1. Identify and place the unwanted materials inside the box.
2. Write Reuse, Recycle, and Repair in each box.

4
Questions:
1. Which materials are reusable? _ _ _
2. Which materials are recyclable? _ _
3. Which materials are repairable?
4. Do you think you can make money out of these materials?
_
5. Cite some benefits in practicing 5R’s.
_

Modify and be creative.

You may do other activities in sorting discarded materials. Donate unused clothes,
toys, appliances etc.

Activity 1.2 “MY EGG TRAY” (day 2)

Objective: Identify ways on how to reuse waste

materials.
Materials: egg tray, loam soil, seeds/seedlings
Procedure:
1. Put some loam soil on the egg tray (carton).
2. Place the seedlings in every hole of the egg tray.
3. Water the seedlings (minimal) and place it in a warm place

Questions:
1. What makes the egg tray (carton) the best alternative pot to plant?

2. Do you think the plants will grow faster? Why?

3. What other things can we make out of egg trays?

_
4. Where do you prepare to plant, In an egg tray or in the garden?

5. What are the benefits in using egg tray (carton)?

5
Activity 1.3 “MY RUBBER POWERED CAR” (day 3)
Objective: Identify and describe ways on how to recycle waste materials
Materials: straws, glue, bamboo sticks, rubber band, empty soft drinks bottle (1.5
L) and soft drinks caps
Procedure:
1. Make four holes on both sides of the bottle.
2. Place the bottle cap and bamboo sticks on the hole
3. Tie the rubber band on both edges of the bottle
caps.
4. Twist the rear bottle cap with rubber and let the
toy car run.

Questions:
1. What do you do to come up with this activity?

2. Why do we need to recycle materials?

3. Are you happy about what you have done? Why?

4. Which do you prefer, buy a new toy car or make your own toy car? Why?

5. Do you think making your own toy car can lessen the unwanted materials in your
home? _

Activity 1.4 “PAPER… ON THE GO!” (day 4)
Objective: Recycle old magazine/newspapers/yellow paper/etc.
Materials: old newspaper or magazines, basin, water, blender, iron, silk screen and,
dress hanger
Procedure:
Here are the five easy steps on how to make a recycled paper

1. Shred the paper. We use our hands to tear the paper into smaller papers.
2. Soak the shredded paper.
3. Mash the paper.
4. Use blender and put the mash paper on it.
5. Transfer the paper pulp to the silk screen.
6. Let it dry.

6
Questions:
1. What kind of material did you use in this activity?

2. How did you come up with this activity?

3. Were you able to make a good recycling project? How do you say so?

4. Cite some benefits in using recyclable materials.

Modify and be creative.

You may do the same activity by using old books or magazine just follow the
procedures then answer the same questions.

Activity 1.5 “FLOWER POT FROM A PLASTIC BOTTLE” (day 5)

Objective: Recycle plastic bottles/containers

Materials: large empty plastic bottle, scissors, sticky
tape, two small strips of felt, compass, pencil, sticky tack,
soil

Procedure:
1. Tie the strips on the neck of the bottle.
2. Cut the two upper portion of the
bottle.
3. Put some soil and plant.
4. Place the bottle with plant anywhere
in the corner of the house.

Questions:
1. How did this activity help you?

2. Do you think it can help to solve waste problems?

3. How can this recycling benefit the environment?

4. Were you able to make a good recycling project? How do you say so?

5. Are plastic or glass bottles better for the environment?

Modify and be creative.

Try another activity. You may design and explore by using other container,
then answer the same questions.

Remember
Describing the 5R’s on the Techniques to Minimize Waste
Reduce -limit or refuse the use of unnecessary materials
Reuse -use the material for other purpose
Recycle -use the material for processing into a new product
Repair -restore material to make it work again
Recover -take back or restore what has been used to a new Material
Solid Wastes- the unwanted or discarded materials that are not liquid or gas. Solid
waste may be classified as biodegradable or non-biodegradable
Materials recovery facility (MRF), also known as materials reclamation facility or
materials recycling facility, solid-waste management plant that processes recyclable
materials to sell to manufacturers as raw materials for new products.
Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production,
consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without
burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or
human health.
Recyclable material means a material which would otherwise become municipal
waste, which can be collected, separated or processed, and returned to the
economic mainstream in the form of raw materials or products.
A landfill site (also known as a tip, dump, rubbish dump, garbage dump,
or dumping ground, and in archeology as a midden) is a site for the disposal of
waste materials.

Checking Your Understanding

Read and analyze the following questions. Make a paragraph or a

sentence and apply what you have learned from this lesson. Use your Science
notebook to answer the question below.
1.) Your father asks you to clean the storage room and you found many
unwanted and discarded materials. What are the first step to segregate
them? Do you think it is advisable to throw all these things in a bin? Why?

2.) Your family celebrate yearly reunion. There are a lot of food left, empty
containers, bottles, food packages, and etc. Describe how your parents and
family members manage garbage disposal?

3.) What is waste segregation? How is it done? What is the most common way
of solid waste disposal?

4.) Why do we apply precautionary measures when we dispose waste materials?

5. ) How do these activities help us to solve the waste problems?

6. ) As a grade 5 pupil, how can you help then government in its effort to solve
the garbage problem in the community?
