What’s New

In poultry raising, familiarization with the different equipment is necessary.

Before discussing the new lesson, answer first this activity.

Activity 1

Directions: Describe the picture below. Do you know the name of this
equipment and its function?

So, today you are going to learn the different tools and equipment of
poultry production and their functions. Are you ready?

What Is It
Many farmers in the Philippines are engaged in poultry production.
Before starting the business, there are important things to prepare like location
or site of the business.

1
In poultry production, the farmers should prepare the materials, tools
and equipment. It requires capital and farm workers. As part of work
completion, preparation of materials, tools and equipment shall be done.

Materials, Tools and Equipment

There are many types of poultry equipment available which are

necessary for successful poultry farming. Proper management and sufficient
equipment are very important for a successful production. The poultry business
has to be managed well because the demand for poultry products is increasing.

Basic Information That Should Be Maintained Before Making a Poultry

House or Chicken Cage

1. The house must have to be dry and clean always.

2. Build the house in an open-air place.
3. Litters of the house should be 3-inch depth.
4. Change the litter of the house every week.
5. Never let the poultry house become wet.
6. You can raise poultry in an open area.

Different Tools and Equipment in Poultry Production

1. Feeder - This is used for feeding the chicken. It is either metal or plastic.

2. Heater - The heating equipment can be used to warm up the chicken

cage. An example is bulb.

3. Incubator - This is used for hatching the bird’s egg in unnatural or artificial
way. Through the use of incubator, the birds hatch a huge number of
eggs.
2
4. Laying Nests - These help the poultry birds in laying eggs. These also
increase egg production.

5. Emergency Standby Electric Plants - These are used when there is failure
in the local electrical supply and there are located on the site next to the
hatchery building.

6. Brooder - This is an equipment used to provide warmth and light to the

baby chicks during the first few weeks of life.

Different Equipment Used for Brooding

a. Charcoal Stove / Kerosene Stove

This is used in places where electricity is not available.

b. Gas Brooder
The natural gas, LPG or methane is connected to the element which is
hanged 3 to 5 ft. above the chick to provide heat.
3
c. Electrical Brooder
This is a thermostatically controlled heating system that spreads the
required amount of heat above the large area.

7. Feeding Equipment - It is used to feed the birds. It is either conventional,

semi-automatic, and made of metal and plastic.

What’s More

What’s up! Now that you know the different tools and equipment of
poultry production, try to review your lesson and do this activity.

Activity 2. Slogan Making

Directions: Think of a slogan on how to be a successful poultry farmer. The

slogan can be expresses using the local dialect.

Materials: white cartolina

pentel pen / marker

While performing the activity, it is important that you assess your

performance following the criteria below.

Criteria Score
20 15 10 5
Relevance 60%
Rhyme 20%
Presentation 10%
Neatness 10%
4
Interpretation of Scores:
16 - 20 - Excellent output
11 - 15 - Very good
6 - 10 - Fair output
5 and below - Poor output

What I Have Learned

Hi there! Now that you know the different tools and equipment in poultry
