What Is It
Lesson 1. Breeding of Male and Female Animals
Origin of Fowl
It is believed that the modern breed of poultry probably
originated from wild species: Red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus), Grey
jungle fowl (Gallus sonnerati), Ceylon jungle fowl (Gallus lafayetti),
Java jungle fowl (Gallus varius).
India has made considerable growth in broiler production in the
two decades. High quality chicks, equipments, vaccines and even
medicines are accessible entire region. With an annual output 41.06
billion eggs and 1000 million broilers. They rank as fourth largest
producer of eggs and fifth in poultry broiler in the whole world. The
reason why broiler farming given significance in the national policy
and has a good scope for expansion in the years to come.
Today, there are hundreds of highly prolific poultry breeds available
around the world. Some are famous for egg production, meat
production, both meat and egg production, ornamentals/fancy and
fighting class production.

Below are the Types of breeds on the basis of their productivity:

1. Egg Productive Poultry Breeds (Layer) – are known as layer
chickens. Practically all types of commercial layer poultry breed
star laying eggs within their five to six month of age. They
continuously lay about 275 to 300 eggs per year some are 330
eggs per year. Leghorn, Minorca, Ancona and Fayoumi are
highly productive breeds.
Characteristics:
a. Comparatively weights less than other poultry breeds.
b. Gain sexual maturity earlier.
c. Less egg incubating trend.
d. Start laying eggs within their five to six month of age.
e. Converting efficiency of food to egg is very high.
f. Contain less fat in their body.
g. Egg producing power is very high.
h. Lay big sized eggs.
2. Meat Productive Poultry Breeds (Broiler) – used only for meat
production purpose. Their meat become very soft and tasty.
They weights about 2 to 2.5 kg within their 7 to 8 weeks of age,
consuming about 4 kg of food. Exact for marketing within 8
weeks and most popular breeds of broiler poultry are Starbro,
Plymouth rock, Cornish, Sussex, brahma, hy-line, rose broiler,
5

developed by national and international aficionados in this
game. Examples : Rubie, Hulsay, Claret and oasis
Standard Classification of Breeds of Poultry

6
Tips on Breeding pure Breeds of Chicken
1. Start with the best flock – an expensive approach,
considering some birds coming from top breeders will sell
hundreds of pounds, considering the number of years of
selective breeding it takes time to produce such kind of
birds.
2. Inbreeding – meaning breeding related from related stock,
keeping the same genetic pool and therefore as faults occur,
these can be eliminated through selection.
3. Out-crossing – from the inbreeding result if you found the
characteristic you desire is not in your strain, next to do is to
outcross to the birds. Another reason the birds so inbred
that hatchability suffer.
4. Combs on cockerels – the comb of cockerel comes from the
dam then you would like to improve the comb, best way is to
select hens with a nice comb in the breeding area.

What Is It

The purpose of constructing a poultry house is to protect

the birds from animals and other pests and thieves and to keep out
mice, rats and birds from eating valuable poultry feeds and
transmitting diseases.
The house should be low cost and constructed from local
materials as possible. But raw materials like bamboo, thatched roof,
wooden palm leaves will last only to 4-5 years unless refurbished
when wear and tear occurs. More expensive materials can be used fo

What’s New

permanent house constructed from sawn timber, poles, cement, wire –

mesh, galvanized iron etc.
Basic requirements for the building:
1. It is rain proof
2. It protects poultry from direct sunlight
3. It is not subject to flooding
4. It is wild bird proof (difficult to do)
5. It has enough space
6. It is easy to clean out
7. It has a solid door with a lock
Important consideration in Positioning a poultry house as follows:

20
 To protect poultry from wind and rain storms
 To prevent direct sunlight from entering the house and
stressing the birds
 To have good drainage around the house to protect it
from flooding.
 To avail of the prevailing wind to cool the house in a
warm climate
General layout of poultry house

1. Poultry house should be located away from the residential

and industrial area.
2. It should have proper road facilities.
3. It should have the basic amenities like water and electricity.
4. Available of farm laborer relative to cheaper wages.
5. It should be located in an elevated area.
6. It should have proper ventilation
7. It should not allow visitors or outside vehicles near the
sheds.
8. It should be located near the fresh air first passes through
brooder, grower, and layer sheds. This will prevent the
spreading of diseases.
9. A minimum distance is strictly observe of 50-100 feet
between chick, grower and layer shed a minimum of 100
meter.
10. The egg store room, office, and feed store should be
located near the entrance.
11. Disposal pit and sick room is constructed at the extreme
end of the site.
Different types of housing for poultry

1. Deep litter
- The birds are kept in litter floor.
- Arrangement for feed, water and nest are made inside
the house.
- Fresh litter materials spread on the floor.
- The birds are kept on suitable litter materials of about
3’’ to 5’’ depth.
- Usually paddy husk, saw dust, ground nutt hulls,
chopped straw or woods.
Advantages:
- Vitamin B2 and Vit B12 are made available to birds
from the litter material by the bacterial action
- the welfare of birds is maintain to some extent,
- the deep litter manure is a useful fertilizer and lesser
nuisance from files when compared to cage system

21
Disadvantages:
- because of direct contact o birds and litter bacterial
- and parasitic diseases be a problem.
- Respiratory problems may occur due to dust.
- additional cost for litter expense
2. Cage system
- Involves rearing of poultry on raised wire netting floor
in smaller compartments, called cages, very efficient
for laying operations.
- Auto-operated feeding trolleys and egg collection and
droppings are either collected in trays underneath
cages.
Advantages:
- minimum floor is needed, more number of eggs per
hen can be received, less feed wastage, better feed
efficiency, sick and unproductive birds can be easily
identified and eliminated and clean eggs production.
- vices like egg eating, pecking and broodiness is
minimal, no need of litter materials and can be
adopted through artificial insemination.
Disadvantages:
- high initial investment cost, handling of manure and
cage layer fatigue may be19a problem.
3. Elevated cage system
- The height of the shed is raised by 6-7 feet using
concrete pillars and a distance of 10 feet between two
pillars.
- The inter platform distance is 6-7 feet depending upon
the type of cages used and total height is 20-25 feet
with 30-33 feet width.
- Provide sufficient ventilation in tropical countries.
4. Cage rearing of broiler
- Similar to grower cage. To prevent the breast blisters,
the bottom of the cage will be coated to plastic
materials and 50% of the floor requirements needed in
deep litter.
Advantages:
- higher density of rearing and easy to catch the birds at
the market, no expenditure, no incidence of
coccidiosis, reduce cannibalism, cleaning and
disinfection easier and better growth and feed
efficiency.
Factors to consider in choosing a good poultry housing system
1. Your research – the first thing to do for you to decide the
best poultry housing system from a reliable source you
gather.
2. The purpose – help to avoid all the inconveniences and costly
readjustments and help to put up the right housing for

22
your poultry farm.
3. The climatic conditions – help you put up poultry housing
that takes care of those challenges and also inquire from the
poultry farmers in your area regarding the climatic
challenges.
4. The location
5. The type or breeds of birds -help design the appropriate
housing with appropriate spacing.
Characteristics of a good poultry housing system
1. Controlled access – designed in such a way that workers can
move easily, unrestricted by obstacles and ease of movement
help in feeding, providing water and effective cleaning of the
farm.
2. Comfortable flooring or beddings for the birds – it is safe for the
birds and for the eggs but if bedding is poor, eggs can be easily
cracked and earn losses.
3. Convenient to clean
4. Easy egg collection
5. Good lighting and heating system – provide adequate warmth,
ensures and lightens the house to find their food.
6. Proper ventilation – prevents the spread of flu and other
contagious diseases and a key feature to the success of a
poultry farm.
20
7. Effective waste disposal unit – reducing the birds in exposing
diseases.
8. Division for different ages and species of birds
9. Standard hatchery unit
Housing equipment
1. Feeding troughs or feeder – can be placed inside or along the
front of the cages. When making feeders, considers the ease
in cleaning and avoided by placing metal or wooden strip
along the inner mouth of the feeding trough.
2. Water – to facilitate cleaning, the shape and size of the
waterer should be semi-circular.
3. Portable catching panels – is usually made of either bamboo,
wood or wire frames. This device comes in handy during
vaccination.
4. Feed carts – a handy equipment which can reduce the
number of hours spent in feeding the chicken. it makes the
feeding less tiresome and laborious.
