INTRODUCTION BHILAI STEEL PLANT Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is Indias sole producer of rails and heavy steel plates andmajor producer of structural. The plant is the sole supplier of the country's longestrail tracks of 260 meters. With an annual production capacity of 3.153 MT of saleable steel, the plant also specializes in other products such as wire rods andmerchant products. Since BSP is accredited with ISO 9001:2000 QualityManagement System Standard, all saleable products of Bhilai Steel Plant comeunder the ISO umbrella.At Bhilai IS0:14001 has been awarded for Environment Management System inthe Plant, Township and Dalli Mines and it is the only steel plant to getcertification in all these areas. The Plant is accredited with SA: 8000 certificationfor social accountability and the OHSAS-18001 certification for Occupationalhealth and safety. These internationally recognized certifications add value toBhilais products and helps create a place among the best organizations in the steelindustry.

Location: Forty kms west of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh, along the Howrah-Mumbairailway line and the Great-Eastern highway, stands Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP).

PLATE MILL The first plate was made by BSP in 29 march 1983& it was established by Aug 1975 Some general Information about plate mill Capacity - 9,50,000 MT Plates thickness - 8-120 mm Width - 1500-3270 mm Length - 5-12.5 M The modern Plate Mill rolls out heavy and medium plates, as well as those for pipemanufacturers. Plates of wide variety, in any required size, and strength, chemicaland physical properties, can be produced here. It has capacity to produce high pressure, boiler quality and high tensile steels. Shipbuilding plates, conforming toLloyds specifications, and pressure vessel boiler plates, conforming to variousASTM, ASME standards, have withstood the challenges of nature and time. Someof the unique features of the mill are on-line finishing facilities and off-linenormalizing facilities. Bhilai has the widest plate mill in the country, and it usescontinuously cast slabs as input. Liquid steel produced under controlled conditionsin the LD Converters is rinsed with argon gas to homogenize the composition aswell as to remove non-metallic inclusions before continuous casting so as to ensurethe production of high quality feedstock for the Plate Mill. As per customers'requirement or specifications, plates are normalized in a roller hearth normalizing furnace.
