The hazardous chemical formaldehyde continues to be found on a regular basis in garments and other productsshippedaroundtheworld. Formaldehyde is used in adhesives, textile processing and as a preservative in some paints, coating productsandalsoinsomecosmeticsandmaybefoundineveryday productssuchashandbags,footwear, accessories,garments,beautyandcosmeticproducts. Formaldehydeiscommonlyrestrictedbybrandsandglobalregulationsaccordingtotheendconsumer (adultorchild)withtheacceptablelimitsforchildrenbeingsignificantlylowerthanthoseforadults. Formaldehydeisoneofthekeyexamplesofhowvariabletherestrictionscanbe.

Theuseofformaldehydeinmanyconstructionmaterialsmeansthatitisacommonindoorairpollutant. At concentrations above 0.1 mg/kg in air, inhaled formaldehyde can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes,potentiallyresultinginwateryeyes,headache,aburningsensationinthethroat,anddifficulty breathing. Background ThisRestrictedSubstanceList(RSL)wascreatedbyaspecialworkinggroupoftheAmerican Apparel&FootwearAssociations(AAFA)EnvironmentalTaskForce. TheRSLisintendedtoprovideapparelandfootwearcompanieswithinformationrelatedto regulationsandlawsthatrestrictorbancertainchemicalsandsubstancesinfinishedhometextile, apparel,andfootwearproducts

Methodology TheRSLincludesonlythosematerials,chemicals,andsubstances thatarerestrictedorbannedin finishedhometextile,apparel,andfootwearproductsbecauseof aregulationorlaw.Ineachcase, theRSLidentifiesthemostrestrictiveregulation. TheRSLdoesnotincluderegulationsthatrestricttheuseofsubstancesinproductionprocessesor inthefactory;ratherthefocusisonwhetherornotthesubstancecanbefoundinfinishedhome textile,apparel,andfootwearproductsatacertainlevel.

Thetrainingwasconductedtoincreasetheefficiencyoftheteamwithrespecttoontimedelivery oftestreportstothecustomers.
