Formaldehydeisavolatilecompoundusedwidelyinapparelandtextilemanufacturingasananticreasing andanantishrinkingagent. The hazardous chemical formaldehyde continues to be found on a regular basis in garments and other productsshippedaroundtheworld. Formaldehyde is used in adhesives, textile processing and as a preservative in some paints, coating productsandalsoinsomecosmeticsandmaybefoundineveryday productssuchashandbags,footwear, accessories,garments,beautyandcosmeticproducts. Formaldehydeiscommonlyrestrictedbybrandsandglobalregulationsaccordingtotheendconsumer (adultorchild)withtheacceptablelimitsforchildrenbeingsignificantlylowerthanthoseforadults. Formaldehydeisoneofthekeyexamplesofhowvariabletherestrictionscanbe.

Manufacturersandimportershavearesponsibilitytoundertaketestingprogrammes andduediligencein order to comply with international legislation and a number of alert systems actively police dangerous consumerproductsbeforetheyreachthemarketplacetoprotectconsumers.Itisvitaltokeepabreastof internationallegislationonrestrictedchemicalsnotonlytoensureproductsafetyandcompliance,butalso toprotectyourcompanyreputation. Theuseofformaldehydeinmanyconstructionmaterialsmeansthatitisacommonindoorairpollutant. At concentrations above 0.1 mg/kg in air, inhaled formaldehyde can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes,potentiallyresultinginwateryeyes,headache,aburningsensationinthethroat,anddifficulty breathing. Formaldehydeisalsoclassifiedasacarcinogen.

Background ThisRestrictedSubstanceList(RSL)wascreatedbyaspecialworkinggroupoftheAmerican Apparel&FootwearAssociations(AAFA)EnvironmentalTaskForce. TheRSLisintendedtoprovideapparelandfootwearcompanieswithinformationrelatedto regulationsandlawsthatrestrictorbancertainchemicalsandsubstancesinfinishedhometextile, apparel,andfootwearproducts

Methodology TheRSLincludesonlythosematerials,chemicals,andsubstances thatarerestrictedorbannedin finishedhometextile,apparel,andfootwearproductsbecauseof aregulationorlaw.Ineachcase, theRSLidentifiesthemostrestrictiveregulation. TheRSLdoesnotincluderegulationsthatrestricttheuseofsubstancesinproductionprocessesor inthefactory;ratherthefocusisonwhetherornotthesubstancecanbefoundinfinishedhome textile,apparel,andfootwearproductsatacertainlevel.

TheWorkshopwasattendedbylargenumbersofIndustryProfessionalsfromtheCentralPunjabregion. TheQualityDepartmentofTextileTestingInternationalorganizedanInhouseTrainingsessionon Time Management. The technical Team and the Customer services department attended the session. Thetrainingwasconductedtoincreasetheefficiencyoftheteamwithrespecttoontimedelivery oftestreportstothecustomers. Mr.Tariq Maqsood ( Head of Quality Department) while delivering the presentations mentioned that,althoughTtiwasalreadyprovidingaverygoodturnaroundtimeof23Days,thereisalwaysa roomforimprovement.HesaidthatTtihasplanstofurtherreducethereportingtimetoasingle day.
