Alexandria Bursiek 10th grade This is my first year at Kornerstone Charter School and the year has been filled with new experiences. I was faced with project based learning, fellowship, job shadows and projects, and these things were monumentally important to my growth and learning. Though the start was shaky and scared me half to death, it made a difference in my life and thats more important than how comfortable I feel. The most obvious new experience I was faced with was Project-Based Learning(PBL). When I was transferred to Kornerstone I found myself bombarded with a whole new way of learning. The first hoop I jumped through was proposals week. I found myself struggling to have a model outline. I thought if it wasnt perfect it was unacceptable. When I walked out of the proposal meeting with the advisors telling me my work was unparalleled but still needed work, I was dejected. When I shuffled into my

second proposal meeting during the next cycle my goal was to get it approved instantly. But I was disheartened again. This time my proposal was so picked apart it didnt feel like my project anymore. It took three cycles for me to finally realize the proposals aren't about getting things right, they are there to make our projects all they can be. Now I see just how important it is for my learning. PBL time was another new concept for me. Spending a large part of my day working independently was extremely difficult. I was off task constantly during my first project cycle. As the year progressed I got better and better. Even though I still have some off task behavior Ive grown and learned to take advantage of my time. Which is a great thing with the event nights showing up every ten weeks . For me, event night is like a monstrous storm heading my way. If Im not prepared its gonna blow over my house and take me with it. The first two event nights made me look like a chicken with its head cut off. I raced everywhere trying to make everything perfect. But the event nights gave me a sense a security. I was able to meet my deadlines and get everything ready each time. I proved Ill be able to accomplish similar feats when Im on my own in the world and thats one of the most important things for a person to have. Granted an even more important skill to have is the ability to work well with others. Coming in to the school I thought I had mastered that skill. I quickly realized I still had a long way to go. With the large eighth grade population I felt like a superior. I was practically an adult compared to these kids and I know many other tenth graders felt the same way. In the beginning it was difficult not to look at the 8th and 9th graders as children. It took until the start of the third project cycle for me to see them as being equal to me. They have a lot to offer and its dismal to think I wasnt willing to listen to them at first because of their age. When I started out here I was a very secluded person. I only wanted to interact with the people I already knew. Despite my attempts to avoid those I wasnt familiar with my list of friends grew. And now I can proudly say I know and am comfortable with everyone at school. And because of these friendships I receive a lot of support with my projects. Students were willing to edit my work, give advice and help me locate more sources. Which was very beneficial to my projects. Not only did these friendships help me with my projects, they helped me with my job shadows. For my first job shadow, Alexis and I followed the history teachers at Kimberly High School around for a day. Just to see what it was like to teach. I didnt enjoy it. I felt like I was a part of their classes not a job shadower. Because of that I was very disappointed with the shadow. However, my next shadow definitely didnt let me down. I job shadowed Brian Roebke with Hibah Ansari. Brians a journalist and he really wanted us to know what the job is like. He gave us notepads and pens and told us to cover a story at Piggly Wiggly. I loved it! I enjoyed the opportunity to experience the job. I found that journalism is a profession I may want to get into one day. But handling the work force and mastering the skill of mothering is a challenge. Balancing one's job and spending adequate time with one's children can be a nearly impossible feat. However being a mother is something I have always wanted. For my last job shadow, Im looking into shadowing Mrs.McCabe. I hope to find out what its like to be a stay at home mom. My only hope is that its easier than I think it will be.

Easier doesnt mean better and I definitely learned when working on my projects. My first project looked into the ethics and dynamics of embryonic stem cell research. While writing my article I realized keeping my opinion out of my paper was harder than it looked. I dedicated hours upon hours trying to perfect my piece and keeping the reader guessing what my thoughts were. In the end it was a real success. However, my opinion didnt stay out of my next project. To Make Them Here [sic] is the documentary I shot during the second project cycle. The documentary looks into the power of youth and their effect in the world, when I first started making the video I planned on focusing on a group of kids who protested the price of the newspaper in 1899. The advisors werent too keen on the idea and they slowly advised me until my project turned into something ten times better. My documentary focused on the Wall Street protests and I had the chance to fly to NYC to interview the protesters, I learned through all this change is good and getting feedback and taking advice from others can really improve your learning and help you grow. My last project looked into the history and purpose of the church, and I definitely learned a lot I didnt know. I was mesmerised by the church's history and I found I loved hunting down the facts similarly to how a historian might, it made me feel accomplished. Through the course of this year I have learned and accomplished many amazing things. Every new experience and new challenge made me stronger and more open. Everything that happened to me is an important part of my life and will affect the course it takes. I am grateful for every experience I have had this year.
