The Freedom Township Board of Trustees met a new gravel pit operator, at their monthly meeting May 9. Tom Pigott, of Toledo, Ohio, has purchased the easement and started a new company to reopen the former C&T Aggregates pit on Steinbach Road. He is a lawyer, with experience representing quarry opera-
tors in Ohio. Pigott made a pledge to the board. I guarantee you will not Pigott have those kinds of issues with us, said, he referring to problems the township has had with previous pit
operators. The pit was closed last year, after C&T declared bankruptcy, and the township board had been trying to decide how to deal with reclaiming the land. Pigott will be applying for necessary permits shortly, a process that is expected to take several months. He plans to invest in an excavator, off-road truck, and wash plant, which will separate the material into fill, concrete
sand, and pebble stone. If we can get 50,000 tons out the door this season Ill be happy, he said. The challenge now is to find gravel buyers, and that hinges on road work. We need some federal money to come in and fix all these Michigan highways, Pigott said. The township board also discussed the matter of the Manchester Community Joint Planning Commission, which may be
reformed, after being dissolved last year. Residents who prefer that Freedom Township not rejoin the organization urged the board to vote on a motion expressing an intention not to rejoin, but the board did not see a need for action other than stating in the minutes that Freedom Township is not rejoining the MCJPC at this time.

The Manchester Farmers Market opens today downtown on Adrian St. and features a variety of items from local vendors.
New and old vendors will line Adrian Street downtown today as the Manchester Farmers Market kicks off its 2012 season. We have loyal vendors who come, said Irene Stedman, market manager. Joining those loyal vendors this year will be members of the Bethel United Church of Christ, fundraising by selling honey, eggs, baked goods, orchids, produce, fruits, jams, plants and much more. We welcome any churches or other groups that want to do fundraising, Stedman said. Stedman anticipates other new vendors, including one who makes breads and jam and a few others selling plants and produce. Right now, well probably have a lot of plants to begin with, Stedman said. Honey, a previous popular purchase, will be available again, but Stedman
will be purchasing it and selling it for the vendor. The market will also host the annual Faerie Fest Aug. 2, where children dress up in costume and participate in activities throughout the market. While downtown Manchester is under construction, Stedman doesnt see it interfering with the market. There shouldnt be anything to worry about on (Adrian) street, she said. Parking is available on Main Street, as construction allows, and in a lot south of the market. The market runs 3:30-6:30 p.m. every Thursday through October. Eight-year-old Hannah Fountain of Manchester Township said the thing her friends find most surprising about her participation in pageants is that she doesnt have to wear a lot of makeup. Hannah, who participates in natural pageants, with minimal makeup, recently finished first in the Little Miss category of a Midwest Galaxy Pageant in Ohio. She will head to Orlando, Fla. in July to compete in the national pageant with girls from nine different countries. Im not nervous, Hannah said. After beginning to participate in pageants when she was very young, Hannah recently picked up the hobby again more than one year ago. She was shy, that was probably the big reason I put her in these, said Sandy Fountain, Hannahs mother. In the Midwest Galaxy pageant, Hannah competes in four categories, fashion wear, evening wear, interview and most photogenic. She finished first in all categories in Ohio, with a tie in most photogenic. For fashion you dont have to wear the dresses and you dont have to walk

Hannah Fountain, 8, will compete in the Midwest Galaxy National Pageant in July in Orlando, Fla. slowly, Hannah said. She said the interview portion is her favorite part, but also the scariest. Its the question that she was asked at the Ohio pageant that she believes won her the crown. Prior to the event, participants fill out a questionnaire and interview
