Lesson: Modelling dissimilar fractions with denominators up to 10 using:
● fraction strips/bars
Objective: Model dissimilar fractions with denominators up to 10 using fraction
strips or bars.

• Dissimilar fractions are fractions that have different denominators.

Concept: We can model or represent these fractions using fraction strips or
bars to easily compare and understand their values.

Example 1:
Model ½ and 1/3 using fraction bars.

Example:

Exercises:
Use paper strips or fraction bars
Activity: 1. Model each pair of fractions below using fraction bars:
a. ¼ and 1/2
b. 2/3 and ¾
c. 1/5 and 1/10

Read the short paragraph below:

Literacy
Almera cut one cake into 2 equal parts and ate 1 piece.
Integration:
Jocelyn cut another cake into 4 equal parts and ate 1 piece.

• Dissimilar fractions are fractions with different denominators.

Concept: We can model these fractions using fraction disks or cicles by

dividing a circle into equal parts to represent the denominator. The
colored parts show the numerator.

Let’s model circle divided into 2 equal parts, shade 1 part-

Draw one circle divided into 2 equal parts, shade 1 part -represents ½
Example:
Draw another circle dividend into 3 equal parts, shade 1 part- represent
1/3

Exercises:
1. Draw two circles for each pair of fractions below.
2. Divide and shade according to the given fractions.
3. Compare the fractions using <,>, or =.

Lesson: Modelling equivalent fractions

Objective: Generate equivalent fractions using models.

Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same part of a
whole, even if they have different numerators and denominators.
1 2 3
Concept: Example: 2
= 4
= 6

These fractions are equal in value because they represent the same
shaded part of a whole.
Using Fraction Strips or Bars:
1
● Shade 1 out of 2 equal parts → 2
2
● Shade 2 out of 4 equal parts → 4
1 2
● Both shaded portions are equal, so = .
Example: 2 4
Using Circles:
● Draw two circles of the same size.
● Divide one into 2 equal parts and shade 1.
● Divide the other into 4 equal parts and shade 2.
● The shaded areas are the same, showing that the fractions are
equivalent.
Let’s Model It!
Use fraction strips, bars, or circles to show that the following pairs are
equivalent.
1 2 3 6
1. 2
and 4
   3. 4
and 8

1 2
2. and
Activity: 3 6

Let’s Complete!
Find the missing number to make the fractions equivalent.
1 ? 3 ?
1. 2
= 4
   3. 5
= 10

2 ? 4 ?
2. 3
= 6
   4. 6
= 9

Mani and Riza shared the same chocolate bar.

Literacy Mani ate 2
of her bar, while Riza ate 4
of hers.
Integration: Who ate more chocolate? Explain your answer in 2–3 complete
sentences using what you know about equivalent fractions.

same area or portion of the whole.
A.Modelling Dissimilar Fractions
1 1
1. Model 2
and 3
using fraction circles:

o Draw two same-sized circles.

o Divide one into 2 equal parts and shade 1.
o Divide the other into 3 equal parts and shade 1.
1 1
o Notice that 2
is greater than 3
because the shaded
Example: part is larger.
B. Modelling Equivalent Fractions
1. Use fraction bars to show:
1
o Shade 1 out of 2 parts → 2

2
o Shade 2 out of 4 parts → 4

1 2
→ Both show the same amount, so 2
= 4
.
