 PUFF STITCH baby blanket

by  Laura  Kovacs  from  theexperimentalhome.com
adapted  from  “Puff  stitch  square”  in  The  Crochet  Stitch  Bible  by  Betty  Barnden  (which  I
highly  recommend)

materials
• worsted  weight  yarn  in  four  colors  (I  used  three  shades  of  purple  and  white).  I
used  a  little  over  one  ball  of  the  first  color  (dark  purple)  and  a  little  less  of  each
other  color.
• Size  H  crochet  hook
• Yarn  needle

puff stitch
This  pattern  uses  a  special  stitch  called  a  puff  stitch  (abbrv.  PS).  Here  is  how  to
make  it.  You  can  also  refer  to  the  video  at
http://www.theexperimentalhome.com/puff-‐stitch-‐baby-‐blanket.

Yarn  over  and  insert  your  hook  in  the  indicated  space.  Yarn  over  and  pull  up  a
large  loop,  about  the  height  of  a  double  crochet.  Yarn  over  and  insert  your  hook
and  again  pull  up  a  large  loop.  Repeat  until  you  have  pulled  up  four  large  loops
(you  should  have  nine  loops  on  your  hook).  Yarn  over  and  carefully  pull  hook
through  all  nine  loops.

pattern
I  worked  each  round  in  a  new  color  repeating  colors  every  4  rounds.  I  did  28
rounds  (7  rounds  of  each  of  the  4  colors)  and  worked  a  border  in  the  first  color.

chain  8,  slip  stitch  (SS)  into  the  first  chain  to  make  a  small  loop.

Round  1:  PS  into  the  ring,  chain  2  (CH2).  Repeat  7  more  times  for  a  total  of  8  puff
stitches  in  the  ring.  SS  into  the  top  of  the  first  PS,  fasten  off.

Round  2:  Join  with  a  SS  into  any  CH  space.  *PS  in  CH  space,  CH2.  PS  into  next  CH
space,  CH2.  Double  crochet  (DC),  CH2,  DC  into  the  top  of  the  next  PS,  then  CH2.*
Repeat  steps  between  the  **  three  more  times  for  a  total  of  8  PS  and  4  DC-‐CH2-‐
DC  corners.  SS  to  the  top  of  the  first  PS  in  this  round.  Your  blanket  should  now
look  like  a  square.  Fasten  off.

Round  3:  Join  with  a  SS  in  into  a  CH  space  between  two  PS.  PS  in  CH  space,  CH2,
repeat  in  next  CH2  space.  In  next  CH  space  (should  be  the  corner,  in  between  2
DC),  DC-‐CH2-‐DC-‐CH2.  *PS,  CH2  in  next  three  CH  spaces.  DC-‐CH2-‐DC  in  corner  CH
space,  CH2.*  Repeat  steps  between  **  two  more  times.  PS  in  next  CH  space,  CH2
and  SS  to  the  top  of  the  first  PS  in  this  round.  Fasten  off.

Round  4  –  28:  Join  with  a  SS  in  any  non-‐corner  CH2  space  (I  found  it  easiest  to
always  start  1  PS  from  the  corner,  but  you  can  start  at  any  point  you  choose).  In
each  CH2  space,  PS,  CH2,  except  in  the  corner  CH  spaces  (in  between  DCs)  where
you  should  DC-‐CH2-‐DC-‐CH2.  SS  to  the  top  of  the  first  PS  in  each  round  and  fasten
off.

Round  29  (border):  Join  with  SS  at  top  of  any  PS.  CH1  and  Single  crochet  (SC)  in
the  same  stitch.  Half-‐double  crochet  (HDC),  DC,  DC,  HDC  in  CH  space.  SC  in  the
top  of  the  next  PS.  At  the  corners,  SC,  HDC,  DC,  DC,  DC,  HDC,  SC  in  the  CH  space.
Work  all  the  way  around  and  SS  to  CH1.  Fasten  off.

Weave  in  ends.  Smile  and  pat  yourself  of  the  back.
