Rust level definition

Level 1
45o
Level 1 rust occurs as a layer
on the surface of the steel or
iron substrate.

Some erosion pitting also

evolves.
For level 1 erosion pitting, the
tangent to the pit walls is less
than 45o against the plane
parallel to the mean plane of
the substrate surface.

Typically level 1 rust builds

up on oxidable steels and
iron alloys, when exposed to
environmental conditions
(humidity and rain) down to
100μm.

In Level 2 rust, all surface

Lin
points of the substrate
should be visible from a
single point above the
surface, once the oxide has
been removed.

Typically level 2 rust builds

up on oxidable steels and
iron alloys, when exposed to
environmental conditions
(humidity and rain) down to
200μm.

Level 3

No Line of sight
Level 3 rust penetrates deep
into the substrate creating
cavitation underneath the top
surface.
In Level 3 rust, there is no
line of sight to all of the
substrate surface. This
implies that the laser has to
ablate steel and metal to
remove all rust.

Typically level 3 rust

proceeds beyond 200μm on
oxidable steels and iron
alloys, when exposed to
environmental conditions
(humidity and rain).

Deeper rust levels requires

slower speed and possibly
smaller spot size as more
substrate needs to be ablated
in order to clear all rust.
The speed of removal reduces
geometrically against the
depth of rust.
