Summer Recreation Guide

Your guide to an active summer

GREETINGS FROM MAYOR MICHAEL J. McGLYNN Welcome to our 2012 Parks and Recreation brochure. We hope that this brochure, in concert with our web site www.medford.org, will prove to be a depository for you and your family when planning your summer activities. We wish to thank the East Cambridge Savings Bank for their continued support of our parks program through their generous donation. With their support, we are able to provide some of the activities outlined in this brochure along with providing summer jobs for the youth of our city. As you will see, we have reorganized the entire summer program. We will continue to offer two park instructors at the following locations: Victory Park; Wrights Pond; Hormel/McGlynn playground and Barry Park. We have selected these locations to correlate with other organized activities nearby. The park program will run from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. (10 A.M. to 2 P.M. at Pond) each weekday from June 25, 2012 to August 17, 2012. This program is free of charge to all children in our community. Note that a pass is needed to visit the Wrights Pond site. In addition, we have worked with various MHS coaches to offer reduced price athletic camps throughout the summer. For a fee of $55 per week, campers will be able to select a camp that suits their interest. Camps run daily from 9 A.M. to 12 noon. My thanks go to the coaches and their staff for participating in this program! This year, Medford Community Rowing program will make its debut. As you may be aware, Crew is a varsity sport at MHS in the fall and spring seasons and is growing in interest each and every year. We thank MHS Crew and Friends of Medford Rowing for there commitment to this program and for making lessons available to youth and adults this summer at a reasonable price! Also, new to Medford Recreation, is the addition of Nellie s Design. This non profit outreach program offers art classes. We will hold the classes in the vicinity of Hormel stadium where the natural environment will help the creative juices flow. This program has been a huge success in nearby communities and we are eagerly anticipating its arrival in Medford. Tried and true, the Medford Family Network will continue to offer Traveling Playgroups in the Park and family concerts at Wrights Pond. While some of the programs have a cost associated with them, please inquire if you are in need of financial assistance. We hope that you find this medley of programming of interest to you and your children this summer. Our goal is to keep the kids safe, provide physical fitness and allow them to interact with many of the wonderful people that make Medford a special place to live.

Summer Park Program

Instructors, one female and one male at each location, serve as role models to help instill the values of leadership, acceptance and group cooperation.
