News for this week: - A technical seminar on Advance Geophysical Technology for Geoexploration and Engineering Applications - Doctoral Comprehensive Examinations - APFED Showcase Program 2008 - Drinking Carton Recycle Project - Library hours - Job vacancies A technical seminar on Advance Geophysical Technology for Geoexploration and Engineering Applications A technical seminar, under the SBIA geophysical investigation project of AIT's School of Engineering and Technology, on "ADVANCED GEOPHYSICAL TECHNOLOGY FOR GEOEXPLORATION AND ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS" will be conducted by Dr. Jung-Ho Kim, Head of the Engineering Geophysics Team, Director of National Laboratory of Geoelectric Imaging, KIGAM, and President of Korean Society for Geosystem Engineering, on Tuesday, 8 April 2008, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Milton Bender Auditorium. Abstract The Korean Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) is well-known for advanced researches in geosciences, including development of geophysical software and equipment. KIGAM has signed a MOU with AIT in March 2007 to support the GEPG program and education of geosciences training at AIT. Dr. J. H. Kim is the head of the KIGAM's engineering geophysical team and is the one who has developed the program RADPRO that is used in the SBIA project for nearsurface investigation of damages at the SBIA site. Two main topics will be presented in this seminar, and namely: Emerging Geoelectric imaging techniques and their applications: - 3D resistivity imaging in confined areas, - Underwater resistivity imaging, - Crosshole resistivity and radar imaging in anisotropic environments, - Delineation of 3D attitude of reflectors by GPR profiling and borehole radar reflection, and - 4D resistivity imaging: dye tracer experiment and the assessment of cement grouting works. GPR data processing and 3D GPR survey: This second part focuses on ground Penetration Radar (GPR) method. Firstly, GPR data processing is discussed on a specific topic, the removal of ringing noise by signal processing, rather than the general aspects of data processing. Through this discussion, it has shown how nicely the subsurface imaging capability of GPR technology can be enhanced by data processing. Secondly, a case history of 3D GPR survey to explore old remains is discussed to introduce our approach for the

effective acquisition and processing of 3-D GPR data. GEPG and SET students are invited to attend. Other interested individuals are most welcome to join. For further details, please contact Dr. Giao at Ext. 5529 or Ms. Supamas at Ext. 6057. Interested persons with these topics are invited to attend. APFED Showcase Program 2008 Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) is a regional group of eminent experts that aims to address critical issues facing Asia and the Pacific region and to propose new models for sustainable development. To promote sustainable development in the region, APFED launched the APFED Showcase Program as one of the main activities. The Program is supported by the Ministry of Environment Japan. The APFED Showcase Program, grants up to US$ 30,000 to Asia-Pacific projects that demonstrate innovative approaches. This year APFED is pleased to announce another round of proposals selection to be endorsed by the Program. Further information such as eligibility, how to apply, and the proposal format can be obtained from the following websites: http://www.roap.unep.org/highlight/APFED.html#1 and http://www.apfed.net/showcase/ The completed proposals should be e-mailed to: unep-apfed@un.org Deadline: 31 May 2008 Drinking Carton Recycle Project Saturday 5th - Friday 11th of April 2008 A master's student from Sweden is running a recycling project, together with the SU Environment Committee, for one week between Saturday April 5th and Friday April 11th.

What? Everyone is asked to participate in this short collection raid of drinking cartons (also known as Tetra Brik). Around the AIT campus, five collection bins resembling milk/juice cartons will be placed out in order to make it clear what is collected in them. Why? This project is carried out with the aim to increase recycling and to find a new recyclable fraction in the solid waste generated around AIT. Working towards a Clean Green AIT Library hours Please be informed that the Library will be CLOSED on the following days: - Sunday 6 April 2008 (Chakri Day) - Saturday 12 - Wednesday 16 April 2008 (Songkran Holiday) The Library will be open on Thursday 17 April 2008.
