School leader search near end

Assistant superintendent nalists interviewed Monday
By Lori Maranville
Special Writer

Milan Area Schools is a step closer to finding

a successor to outgoing Assistant Superintendent Julie Helber, as well as filling other important staff positions.

Helber will be taking a position as principal at Saline High School. Superintendant Bryan Girbach said there were 72 applicants for the position and that eight were to be interviewed June 18. We are very confident

that we have some great candidates amongst that pool, he told the Milan Board of Education during its meeting June 13. Two of the candidates, he said, are from out of state. Two or three finalists will be selected from that

group for a second round of interviews Thursday. Our ultimate goal is to have a recommendation to the Board of Education by the July 11 board meeting to appoint a person to that

District projects balanced school budget for 12-13

Unexpected state money, rainy day fund helps Milan
By Lori Maranville
Special Writer

Thanks to some unexpected revenue from the state and the ability to dip into its rainy day fund, Milan Area Schools is projecting a balanced budget for 2012-2013. The Board of Education adopted a preliminary budget this month, reporting a projected $22,589,896 in revenue and $24,981,316 in expenses in the general fund. Superintendent Bryan Girbach said the district will use some of its estimated $2,544,000 fund balance, leaving a projected $152,627 in the fund balance for next year. Michelle Cowhy, the districts finance director, said the positive fund balance is the result, in large part, to some unexpected state aid revenue. She said about $763,000 was added to the fund bal-

ance projection, which includes about $705,000 in state aid. A foundation increase for Milan of $120 per student is part of the state revenue bolstering the fund balance, Cowhy said. Girbach urged those attending the board meeting to call state legislators and thank them for providing the additional funds to the lowest-funded districts. Handing the lowest foundation districts $120 when they didnt hand every district that, I would just ask that you take the time to either send an email or put a phone call out to your legislators and thank them for that, Girbach said. They took a big step doing that. Also figured into the added revenue was state aid for the Milan school district as a participant in the Michigan Public Employees Retirement Service, aid from the states best practices funding and funding provided based on Medicaid-eligible students.

City to pay for improvements to re department

$100,000 request lower than usual
By Jim Pruitt

The city of Milan will cough up the money for

capital improvement for the Milan Area Fire Department, but it says only this one time. The City Council approved the request June 11, City Administrator Benjamin Swayze said. The request was more

than the city had budgeted for and will require an amendment to the budget of some $12,000. Swayze said the fire department usually requests $100,000 from its municipalities and the money is put in a fund to

save up for equipment purchases. The fire department recognized that its municipalities were being affected by the slumping economy and reduced the requested amount to $70,000 last year. City documents stated this was welcome news as

revenue has declined 34 percent over the past six years, while the Milan Area Fire Departments requests have risen 1.6 percent. The City Council spent some time discussing the
