PURPOSE
Students will practice their observational drawing skills (drawing from life).
Students will use contour lines to define the shapes and value to add visual depth to a 2D
surface.
Students will use black and white media to add a full range of value.
PROCEDURE
Drawing with white material on black paper does require
some getting used to. This is because most of us are
accustomed to drawing with dark material on white or lightly
colored paper. This thinking has engrained in us the need to
add dark values and leave the lighter values. When we
reverse this thinking by drawing with white material on black
paper, our process is the opposite. Now, we must train our
minds to deal with the lighter values and leave the darker
values to the tone of the surface. This reversal can be
challenging, but important in our development as artists. It
forces us to recognize the importance of tints (lighter values) and their inherent relationships
with shades (darker values). With practice, our understanding of value and how it is used to
create drawings improves.
1. You will be using folded paper for the subject matter of your still life. It is up to you what
you draw-either a paper airplane or origami. Create you still life.
2. In your sketchbook, create at least 4 different thumbnails of your composition. On a full
page in your sketchbook, draw your chosen composition and shade it with pencil.
Recreate your composition on black paper and add value using white pencil (this will be
a reverse drawing). You will be creating two drawings.
Make sure you add a full range of value.
Do not use your finger to blend; your kneaded eraser or a blending tool will work
better.
Think about composition and cropping.
