These are puppets controlled by one hand which occupies the interior of the puppet. Punch and Judy puppets are familiar examples of hand puppets. Larger varieties of hand puppets place the puppeteer's hand in just the puppet's head, controlling the mouth and head, and the puppet's body then hangs over the entire arm. Other parts of the puppet (mainly arms, but special variants exist with eyelids which can be manipulated; the mouth may also open and close) are usually not much larger than the hand itself. Here are some ideas of what to put in Kathy the Cats basket (basket also has the short vowel a sound): apple ant hat -and/or Students can create their own puppets, after they see your Kathy the Cat empty her basket. When students play with their own Kathy the Cat they will remember the // sound. You can also use the Kathy the Cat as a center activity
Rod Puppet
A puppet constructed around a central rod secured to the head. A large glove covers the rod and is attached to the neck of the puppet. A rod puppet is controlled by the puppeteer moving the metal rods attached to the hands of the puppet and by turning the central rod secured to the head.
Activity: Dialogues Grammar item: Simple Phrase A scene can be made where the childrens puppets answer questions that the teachers puppet asks. Action phrases including stand up and sit down or Im sleepy can be acted out. Puppets can also be used to demonstrate run away and chase. The children will be pleased as they can understand what each character of the puppet are doing.
