TOPIC COVERED

Repetitive strain injuries(rSI)

Other names of RSI

Work related upper limb disorder(WHO) Occupational overuse syndrome(NZ). Cumulative trauma disorder (USA). Computer related injuries (CSI).

RSI Facts and figures

OSHA estimates 7000,ooo RSIs occur every year . 15-20% computer users through out the world may have estimated RSI. 3 out of 5 in Sweden have symptoms of RSI. Every day 6 people in UK have to leave their jobs due to RSI.

DID YOU KNOW?

75% Indian computer users report pain/numbness. Over 30 young Indians IT/ITES professionals have lost their jobs because of advanced RSI. 55% of Indian computer users got injured within a year of starting their jobs.

You are computer athlete

A dangerous occupation: This is also dangerous:

As a typical computer user walk" several Miles each day on your fingertips (250 keystrokes/min)*(2 in/keystroke)*4 hours = 2 miles

What is RSI?

Respective Strain Injuries(RSI)

Is nerve problems in upper extremity(hand, arms, or shoulders) Can also include neck and back Is a soft tissue disease (muscles and nerves ) Is an overuse syndrome

Symptoms:
Tightness, discomfort, stiffness, Soreness or burning in the hands , wrists, fingers, forearms, or elbow Pain that wakes you up at night; tingling, coldness or numbness in hands And loss of strength and coordination in the hands

Repetition of task

Too much stress

Muscles

tendons

Nerves

Other soft tissues

RSI

Root cause
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Working in one position for years Millions of repetitions Work intensity Aging and loss of tissue resilience Physiology and anatomy ergonomics personality

Initial Results
8. Fatigue 9. Slouching posture 10.Muscle tension 11. Chest compression

Secondary result becoming cause

12. compensation and overloading 13. Inflammation and swelling 14.Abrassion and irritation 15. Nerve entrapment 16. Loss of sleep

Ultimate results
17. Pain 18.Numbness 19. Anxiety or depression

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

CTS is caused when central nerve that controls the functioning of hands and fingers become compressed inside a tunnel made up of wrist bones or carpals.

Symptoms Of CTS

Pain and discomfort Numbness and coldness in hand Loss of strength and/or joint movement

Swelling and stiffness in hands

The need to massage your hand , wrists and arms Heaviness and even disturb sleeps

Reasons For CTS Injuries

Long hours in the keyboard those that type more than four hours Lack of circulation in the muscles that prevent nutrients and oxygen to reach the tissue Inadequate rest and breaks Poor posture including the sitting ,placement of hands on the keyboard and proper height of the keyboard Poor diet (lack of vitamins)

Treatment of CTS

Rest, rest and more rest Use of wrist brace or splint Take medication like ibufren Take vitamins Keep hand warm take breaks ,

exercise your hands and arms

Use your knowledge of ergonomics Surgery will be your last retreat if everything else fails

EYE STRAIN

Eye strain is the single largest complaint of computer users causing soreness, irritation ,blurred vision, redness and dryness of eyes.

Reasons for injury

Bad monitor resolution, flickring,or glare at the monitor Poor lighting condition in the room. Distance between eye and screen ,readability of the screen. Electromagnetic radiation emitted by CRT(UVA). Staring for anything for long period of time. Loss of negative ions in the atmosphere due to electrostatic charges on the on the face of CRT.

Symptoms of eye strain

Impaired vision, double vision, blurred vision Difficulty of looking at one point for a period of time Itchy dry eyes and discomfort while looking at the VDT Headache Eye fatigue that can have serious impact later in life Watching and other sensation are eye problems associated with the computer maneuverings

Eye Strain Treatment

Use your knowledge of ergonomics Take breaks when you feel strain Use you laptop when possible because monitor emits less radiations Use a monitor that holds a steady image without flickering Use the zooming function to improve readability The screen should be kept 18-30 inches from ones eyes or about an arms length.

Internet addiction

Use internet every day without days off. Loosing track of time while surfing the net . Denial of high usage. 51% of internet addicts suffer sever job impairment. 58% of get addicted within the firs 12 months of internet usages. Web addicts display similar brain changes to those addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Discomgoogolation

It is defined as the feeling of distress or anxiety when unable to gain immediate information access. Derived from discombobulate which mean illusion and Google The internet user suffers from distress or anxiety when unable to get connected to the internet. They felt frustrated and confused while unable to

get online. Some had higher level stress

Prevention

Use internet when necessary. Try to have account on only one of the social networking sites. indulge in other hobbies . Take care of time while chatting If still suffered by online mania ,

consult psychologist. There is an also anti -face book blog called sickfacebook.com to discuss issues

Stress and Depression

Computer operators experience more stress than any other occupational group the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has studied .

Other computer related hazards

Back problem (pain) caused from the efforts of the muscles to hold your posture for long periods of time. Skin rashes that are caused from the static fields in front of the screen causing ions and pollutants in the air to become positively charged and attach themselves to your negatively charged skin (especially in low humidity ).

Abnormal reproductive outcome due electromagnetic radiation's affects on biological functions and biochemical processes inside our cells .
Cancer and leukemia(?)

Skin aging(?).

Ergonomics

Ergonomics, the "science of work," is a field of technology that considers human capabilities and limitations in the design of machines and objects that people use, the work processes that they must follow, and the environments in which they operate."

A few ergonomic advice

Use a chair that has full support of your back, is adjustable, and has a footrest and armrest Place your feet firmly on the floor Use an ergonomic keyboard that is angled or can split to enjoy a more natural typing position Use a wrist rest that is comfortable Place your hands straight when typing, the angle of your forearm and upper arm should be 90 degrees Sit 24 to 28 inches away from your monitor Place the monitor 15-30 degrees below your straight-ahead line of sight Keep your body away from the sides and backs of monitors to reduce the exposure of radiation Avoid glare on your monitor (do not have strong sources of light in your back) and use screens that minimize glare Use the proper light in your work environment that is compatible with the monitor frequency
