MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Background And Objective

A steel rod specimen was given.

A heat treatment process was done on it.

OBJETIVE

is to workout the specimen and analyze the heat treatment process.

Cutting And Sectioning

Cut-Off Wheel

# Two Motors # 30 Liters Storage Tank Water and well cut oil 30: 1 ratio was used as coolant The cut off wheel used was high carbon wheel ( Type A 120 N). Jaws for holding specimen (work with rack and pinion gear).

Cut Off Machine

MOUNTING/PRESRERVATION The process was done with Mounting Press.

Mounting Press

# Hydraulic Unit #Mold Unit

Thermo plastic and Thermosetting resins are

used for mounting.

Working Condition for Bakelite

Temperature 160 -170. Pressure Time

130 Kg/cm. 6 9 minutes.

Grinding And Polishing

Planarization And Reduction of Damage Caused By

Cutting.
Creation Of Smooth And Shiny Surface Wet grinding

COOLING

CLEANING

Planer Grinding
Done with help of GRINDING WHEELS Abbrasive Material

Bounded Abbrasive Coiled Abbrasive

Grit Size

40 To 150 Mesh 180 To 300 Mesh

Planar Grinding
During the process the specimen was

rotated by 45 to 90 after 5 minutes.

The rotation was done to reduce

scratches.
The time taken by planar grinding was 4o

minutes.

Polishing
Time taken by the polishing was 1 hour.
Rough Polishing

THE PROCESS WAS DONE BY MEANS OF

POLISHING WHEELS ( ROTATING WHEELS) ABRASIVE GRIDS USED WAS 400, 500, 600.

Fine Polishing

ALUMINA COLLIDAL SILICA DIAMOND PASTE (SIZE RANGES FROM 1 TO 9 MICRON)

ETCHING
To clarify and simply the microstructure aching was

done.
Enhancement Of Microstructure By Action Of NITAL.

NITAL:

Solution Of

98%ETHANOL(C2H5OH) 2%NITRIC ACID(HNO3)

Washing and Drying

After etching specimen was washed with water. Then dried was dryer. These processes are done to make the

specimen ready for micro examination This is done to make specimen completely pure from impurities.

Microscopic Analysis And comparison

Done with ELECTRIC MICROSCOPE Comparison with standard specimens revealed the

result that
The given specimen is

ANNEALED

Hardness Testing

Hardness The resistance offered by a material to applied load against surface penetration, fracture, aberration and scratches Categories of hardness test Elastic hardness Resistance to cutting and abbression Resistance to indentation

Vicker hardness test

This test is performed by vicker hardness testing

machine. The load range is between 200g to 500g. The instrument uses a squre based diamond pyramid indentor. The least count of scale is 10 micron. Hardness of the material is calculated by following expression. HV=1854.4P/d^2
