SOLID

A solid is a state of matter characterized by particles arranged in such a way that they have a relatively stable shape
and volume.

The characteristics of solid substances are fixed shape and

volume. For example, a marble that is round in shape,
transferred to a glass will remain round, as well as its
volume.
SOLID PARTICLES HAVE THE
FOLLOWING PROPERTIES:
• Located very close together (no cavities).
• The arrangement is regular
• Movement is not free, just vibrates and rotates in place
• Be tough
• Fixed shape and volume (solid, dense, dense)
• High density
• Its compressibility in negligible
• Very low kinetic energy
From the picture, the solid one is ice
LIQUID

Liquids are free-flowing substances, They have a constant

volume with no definite shape. Thus, they take up the shape
of the container they are in. The small particles in them are
held tightly by intermolecular bonds.
LIQUID HAVE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTIC

 no definite shape (takes the shape of its container)

 has definite volume
 particles are free to move over each other, but are still attracted to each other
MORE DETAILS ABOUT LIQUID
Liquids have a definite volume with strong intermolecular forces. Further, the
diffusion is higher when we compare them to solids. Moreover, they have a moderate
density. In addition, they flow easily as they are less rigid. In fact, the kinetic energy
of particles at a certain temperature in liquids is higher than solids.
Example liquid :
Water Magma
GASEOUS STATE
Gas is a state of matter that has no fixed shape and no fixed volume. Gases have lower density than other states of matter, such as solids
and liquids..
Characteristic of gases
• In gases, particles are far apart from each other.
• Force of attraction between the particles is negligible, and they can move freely.
• Gases have neither a fixed volume nor a fixed shape.
• The gaseous state has the highest compressibility as compared to solids and liquids.
• The rate is diffusion is higher than solids and liquids.
• The kinetic energy of particles is higher than in solids and liquids.
An example of gases: nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.
CONCLUSION :
1. Solid has a fixed volume and shape while liquid has a constant volume without a definite
shape, so does a gas that has a fixed volume and shape
2. Solid kinetic energy is lower than gas and liquid, while gas kinetic energy is the most high
3. Solid has an orderly structure while liquid follows the shape of the container in which it is
located.
4. Gas compressibility is high while solid compressibility is negligible.
5. The density of gas is lower than the density of solid and liquid.
