Section 10.

3 Review
1. Describe the solid state according to the kinetic molecular theory.
- In the solid state, the forces of attraction are the strongest so the
particles are very close together meaning they have nowhere to go
so instead of moving they vibrate.
2. What is the difference between an amorphous solid and a crystalline
solid?
- A crystalline solid is made of crystals and is uniform throughout
while an amorphous solid is not organized and looks sort of like a
liquid that was frozen.
3. Account for each of the following properties of solids: (a) the definite
volume, (b) the relatively high density of solids, (c) the extremely low rate
of diffusion.
- A. The particles cannot move around and are not fluid meaning
the volume of the substance cannot change.
- B. Solids are more dense because of how close together the
particles are meaning there is more stuff packed together in a
smaller shape.
- C. Solids take an extremely long time to diffuse because of the
vibration of the particles rather than flat-out movement.
5. Why do crystalline solids shatter into regularly shaped fragments
when broken?
- Crystalline solids are built the same way throughout causing them
to shatter into regular pieces and not just deform like amorphous
solids.
