BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There are many kinds of learning strategies that offered in reading comprehension. One of the strategies is a group-work applying the principles of cooperative learning since it is currently considered as one of the successful teaching strategies in which small team, each with students of different level of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of team is responsible not only for the learning subject being taught but also for helping teammates learn to reach its goals together, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. Students work through the assignment until all group members successfully understand and complete it. The team members have to compete against one another to get better improvement on the basis of their basic scores.

SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH 1. The strategy to teach English reading comprehension during the instructional process in the classroom is cooperative learning focusing on a pair work and students teams and achievement divisions (STAD). 2. The research is stressed on the development of understanding a monolog text: descriptive and recount texts in which the second year students of junior high school have to master. The students are required to find out the main idea, the explicit and implicit information, the generic structure, the authors purpose, reference word, word and phrase meanings of both descriptive and recount texts being learned before.

DEFINITION OF KEY TERM

To sake of avoiding misinterpretation, the writer will of course provide obviously operational definitions for some terms used in this research, such as in the following ways: Cooperative Learning refers to a group learning activity in which students help each other to achieve the goals of learning reading comprehension. Pair-work refers to a strategy or technique applied in teaching reading comprehension where two students are assigned to pair based on the base score to achieve the goals learning reading comprehension.

STAD (Students Team Achievement Division) refers to a strategy applied in teaching reading where students assigned to group of four based on the base score to achieve the goals of reading comprehension. Strategy is defined as the art of devising or employing a plan, step, or conscious action toward achievement of an objective. Specifically, teaching and learning strategy is defined as a specific action taken by teachers to make language learning effective and more enjoyable. Reading Comprehension refers to the act of catching on a word and phrase meaning and reference word, making inference about information, getting main idea, generic structure, and authors purpose.
