SIGNS AND TAGS

Signs & tags are used to alert employees from hazards which can not be eliminated from work sites.

Three types of signs are used in conventional situations :


(1) DANGER SIGNS: An immediate dangerous
situation-special precautions are necessary

(2) CAUTION SIGNS: Alert from a possible hazardPrecautions should be taken

(3) SAFETY INSTRUCTION SIGNS: General instructions & suggestions

SAFETY TAGS

HAZARDOUS OR DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES SIGNS


Sign showing Dangerous substances

Can cause poisoning by

1. Ingestion 2. Inhalation 3. Absorption through tissues

Can cause corrosive damage to

1. Skin 2. Eyes 3. Respiratory system

Can produce harmful effects although not actually toxic or corrosive

Follow fire precautions Acetone, Ether, Gasoline are highly flammable gases

Apart from TNT many substances such as coal dust, flour, starch can explode

Many oxidizing substances can cause fire or explosion Examples : Nitric acid, Peroxides

Work permit system


To be effective the work permit must have following points
1. Satisfied permit issuing person safe to

work.
2. Precise & accurate information. 3. Effective time should be mentioned. 4. Accepting person is responsible for safety .

Acetylene Maroon Chemicals Light grey


Coal gas Canary yellow

Air Light blue

Oxygen Black
Steam Aluminum

Water French blue or Grass green

Reasons for using HAND SIGNALS with crane operator are as follow:
1. Operator is in an enclosed cabin

2. Positioning of load away from the operator

3. Excessive noise from the crane / equipment

4. Noisy work site conditions
