CAREER IN DENTISTRY
Dentistry is a challenging career, with many opportunities for career advancement in various fields. Dental professionals are trained to provide oral health care to individuals. They practise as general dental practitioners and may choose to specialise in a particular field of Dentistry.
A host of career opportunities is available for a dental graduate. One may choose to work with the Ministry of Health, the universities, the armed forces or in private practice. Only in dentistry is medicine, engineering and art closely related.

To qualify as a dental surgeon, one must first obtain a basic degree in dentistry from any of the recognised universities, locally or abroad. To practise dentistry in Malaysia one must first register with the Malaysian Dental Council. As of 5th April 2012, it is compulsory to serve the government for 2 years before a dental surgeon can work as a general dental practitioner in private practice.

Compulsory Service
Part VII of the Dental Act 1971 enacted for national purpose Imposes the need for every new registrant registered on/after 29 June 2001 to undergo a 3-year mandatory national service in the MOH or in public institution approved by the Director-General of Health Malaysia. At the end of the period, the practitioner is at liberty to opt for practice in the public or private sector.
Minister of Health has reduced the compulsory service period from 3 to 2 years effective 5 April 2012

Training of Graduate Dental Officers


Dental officers are required to undergo a 3-day Induction Course or Kursus Transformasi Minda followed by First-Year Dental Officer (FYDO) programme for a year at respective states. The FYDO Programme involves further training in hospitalbased specialist clinics, non-hospital based specialist clinics and primary care clinics as well as community posting.

opportunities for promotion for dental officers. Promotion exercise is based on duration of service. However, the

Special Incentives / Allowances


Apart from the fixed allowances, dental officers in the civil service will also receive other incentives according to their grade and post, subject to the conditions stipulated. Off-office hours allowance is paid to dental officers who perform their duties outside normal working hours according to the following rates: Elaun kerja luar waktu bekerja biasa (EKLWBB)
Tugas Atas Panggilan Aktif (Kadar Semalam)
Tugas Atas Panggilan Pasif (Kadar Semalam)
Bayaran Pegawai yang bersedia di rumah dan dipanggil bertugas melebihi 4 jam : (a) RM130.00 (hari bekerja biasa) (b) RM140.00 (hari cuti mingguan/cuti am) Bayaran Pegawai yang bersedia di rumah dan dipanggil bertugas kurang daripada 4 jam atau tidak dipanggil bertugas : (a) RM80.00 (hari bekerja biasa) (b) RM85.00 (hari cuti mingguan/cuti am)

Special Incentives / Allowances


The regional incentive payment is made according to the conditions stipulated in Service Circular No. 6/1987, i.e. for officers serving in a new region different from their place of origin.

General Dental Practitioners (Grade U41 U54)


The primary duties encompass clinical treatment, prevention and promotion, undergoing and organising in-service training, policy planning and carrying out related research to enhance the quality of dental services in Malaysia. Among the major programmes which directly involve dental officers are the primary oral health, community oral health and dental specialisation programmes. In addition, a dental officer is also responsible for administration and management matters in the clinic and also for the subordinate staff to ensure that every duty is carried out properly. A dental officer should consider pursuing postgraduate training or remain as a general dental practitioner.
