Miss Engo
The three settlements that we are going to be discussing today were made up of three groups of English people who traveled to America to create small communities. These small communities were also known as settlements.
Roanoke Part I
Best known as The Lost Colony.
Sir Walter Raleigh sent two ships to North America in hopes of making his country richer. The ships landed on an island which is known presently as North Carolina.
The sailors named the colony Roanoke after the Native Americans who lived there.
Roanoke Part II
What did the sailors find in Roanoke? They claimed they found fish, fruit, vegetables and friendly people.
Another ship of settlers were sent out, but were unable to be successful and their supplies ran short. They were unable to farm food so they gave up and returned to England.
When he finally returned he couldnt find any sign of the Roanoke colony. The only clue to what happened to the settlers was the word CROATOAN carved into a gatepost.
Jamestown Part I
April 1607, 105 settlers arrived in Virginia and named the colony Jamestown after their king, King James. Since the colony was built on a marsh ( a low area of wetland) it created an unhealthy environment for the settlers. Many of them became sick and by January 1608 there were only 38 settlers left.
Jamestown Part II
The colony survived by Captain John Smith forcing all his remaining people to work. If the people didnt help contribute to the colony they did not eat. This saved the colony and the colony formed a relationship with the local Native American group.
Fun fact! John Rolf was the one who married Pocahontas not John Smith.
Plymouth
Reason for the creation of Plymouth was for religious freedom. A group called the Separatists sailed on the Mayflower. The landed on what is known today as Cape Cod Massachusetts.
Massasoit
Another Native American who was chief of the Wampanoags. He had Squanto make a peace treaty between the tribe and the Pilgrims.
