AN ANGLE
You have seen an electrical pole tied by an iron rope or other pole to keep it straight.
You have seen a divider, hands of a clock. All these give us the idea of an angle.
FORMING AN ANGLE Two rays with same initial points form an angle. The initial point is called the vertex of the angle. The two rays are the arms or the sides. The angle is marked by the arc between the arms

arm
angle vertex O arm B
We use the symbol to denote an angle. We name this angle as AOB or AOB. This angle can also be named as BOA or BOA. While naming an angle, the name of the vertex of the angle is always written in the middle.

To find the number of degrees in an angle , we make Use of an instrument called protractor.
Look at the protractor. There are two semicircular scales on it.
0 to 180 in clockwise direction is the outer scale
0 to 180 in antiClockwise direction Is the inner scale
Outer Scale
Inner Scale
Each sub-division represents 1
MEASURING AN ANGLE A
60
Place the centre of the protractor on the O and adjust so that the base line coincides with one arm.
MEASURING AN ANGLE A
60
We look at the scale of the protractor and find which mark Of the scale lies on the other arm OA of the given angle.
MEASURING AN ANGLE A
60
Read the scale starting from 0 which lies on the arm OB. We find that mark 60 of the inner scale lies on the arm OB. of the angle. Thus the measure of the angle is 60.
MEASURING AN ANGLE A
60
We write it as AOB = 60

An angle of measure 90 is called a right angle. When an angle is of measure 90, we say that the two rays , forming the angle are perpendicular to each other or at right angles.
STRAIGHT ANGLE
180
An angle of measure 180 is called a straight angle.
ACUTE ANGLE A
An angle of measure less than 90 is called an acute angle.
OBTUSE ANGLE A
B
An angle of measure more than 90 is called an obtuse angle.
