UNREAL CITY: STRANGE AND UPROOTED

WILLIAMS AN URBAN METROPOLIS

Unreal city/Under the brown fog of a winter dawn/A crowd flowed over London Bridge , so many/I had not thought death had undone so many/Sighs, short and infrequent, were exhaled (T. S. Eliot, The Waste Land,1922)

CITY AS WILLIAMS SEES IT

DOYLE ON CITY METROPOLIS

Melting pot Full of strangers Alienated populace Rejects ethnicity so uprooted Mixes /takes local and traceable positions as universal(Williams): searches for unity, order, standard

MODERNITY, AURA AND CITY

FOGGED CITY U N C E R TA I N F O R T U N E S

CITY AND THE SPACE

S PA C E , N E E D A N D CONSTRUCTION
created to provide a space for industrial accumulated labour and crowd Based on an utilitarian and give-andtake philosophy of living Believe in creating new modes of urban/metropolitan livelihood Opposed to socio-cultural bonding; favours a self-oriented cum profession- oriented living Based on the logic of progress, equality and principles f profitoriented commerce so a construction out of an industrial need

C I T Y: D O E S I T H AV E AN AURA?

Rejects traditional forms , advocates formless and rootlessness Believes in giving men and women opportunities to utilise their potentials Challenges value systems, roots and so nostalgically misses it So has a flexible and dynamic aura : it is the site of liberation as well as the mechanical bondage that shapes our identity and our sense of objective reality in a place which lacks values such as community and bondage

PERCEPTION AND RESPONSE

DEMOCRACY , EQUALITY AND STRANGENESS

IM INDIVIDUAL, IM FREE OR UPROOTED? CITY

People try to forge and build their fortunes so come out of their own society Believe in self and selfpotential for achievement and success Celebrates opportunities as opposed to communal values

Strange place full of labyrinths , roads and masses Scarce bondage so connected by public tensions, social anxities and fears Utilitarian and busy

CONCLUSION
STRANGENESS IS A SUGGESTED SOLUTION

Something that is unique to one and so opposes democracy and equality Something that instils estrangement, suspicion , uprootedness and loss of community values Changes a human to a mechanical being a self-consuming machine
