THE MUSICAL ALPHABET

Music is written on a STAVE like this one. How many LINES are there?

Notes are named using the first 7 letters of the alphabet

How will you remember?

If its on a LINE use your RHYME!

If its in a space use your FACE

FLIPS DOING BONKERS

GO
ELEPHANTS

HOMEWORK! Make up your own RHYME to remember the letter names of the LINES

BARS, BARLINES and TIME SIGNATURES

You already know that music is divided into equal BARS using BARLINES.

How many bars are there?

To work out how LONG each bar should be we use a TIME SIGNATURE.

The TOP number tells you how many beats the bar should add up to.... this one tells you there are 4 beats in each bar.

How many beats in each bar for these time signatures?

HELP!! Someone has stolen the BARLINES. and the TIME SIGNATURES. Can you help to put them back???

Remember Your Note Shapes! Label each shape correctly

Dotted minim = 3 beats

Semibreve = 4 beats Crotchet rest = 1 beat

Minim = 2 beats

Quavers = 2 half beats

Crotchet = 1 Beat

Rests and Signs

Here are some of the signs and rests used in the music you are playing. How many do you recognise?

crotchet rest

Complete the exercises in your pupil booklet. You have 2 minutes:)

Signs and Symbols

The music you will be playing has other SIGNS and SYMBOLS that tell you different things.
Some tell you how slow or fast to play ANDANTE means play SLOWLY

ALLEGRO means play QUICKLY

Now complete your worksheet.

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS MAN!! MORE signs and symbols???

Actually, these are QUITE important, you know!! These symbols affect the notes that you play. A FLAT A SHARP makes a note LOWER makes a note HIGHER

A NATURAL

cancels a sharp or flat

This means that on a KEYBOARD youll have to use the BLACK NOTES

The BLACK Notes

If a SHARP makes a note HIGHER find and circle all the F#s on this keyboard using the RED pen. If a FLAT makes a note LOWER find and circle all the Bbs on this keyboard using the BLUE pen. Did you get them all??

Almost there!!
Look at these two pieces of music notice where the sharps and flats are.

The KEY SIGNATURE tells you which notes should be SHARP and which should be FLAT. Which line is the sharp on? Which line is the flat on? Now CIRCLE the sharps in the first piece of music and circle the flast in the second piece of music.

KEY SIGNATURES
There are just 3 KEY SIGNATURES for you to remember.

no sharps or flats play all notes natural

1 FLAT

1 SHARP

play all
Bs flat

play all
Fs sharp

Now complete your worksheet.

Putting it all Together

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

How many beats are in each bar? Put the time signature in the correct place. In this key signature, what notes are affected? Are there any in this piece? How many minims are there? I would like to play this piece TWICE, put the correct symbol in place. I would like the last note to be held for a long time, put the correct symbol in place.
