UNIT 1: MUSIC 6

Module 1

Notes and Rests in a Musical Composition

At the end of the module, the learners will be able to:

1. Identify the different kinds of notes and rests.
2. Identify the beat value of the notes and rests.
3. Memorize the musical symbol of different notes and rests.
4. Tell how many beat value of the notes and rests used in a particular song.

Rhythm refers to the flow, the breathing pattern or simply the pulse in music. It uses
different kinds of notes and rest. Rhythm makes you tap your feet, clap your hands, nod
your head, and swing your body.

ACTIVITY:

Sing the song, “Magtanim ay Masaya” and study the musical composition below.

FOLLOW – UP QUESTION

1. What have you observed in the musical composition?

2. Can you identify the different musical composition used in the song?

Beat is used as a measure to regulate the duration of individual tone. It also serves as a
guide in combining notes of various durations.

NOTES

Notes on a staff represent what pitch to play and for how long.

There are different kinds of notes.

1. Whole Note - a note having the time value of two half notes or four quarter notes,
represented by a ring with no stem. It is the longest note now in common use.

2. Half Note - A note is held for 2 counts, which means it lasts for twice as long as a quarter
note. A Half note has a stem and a white note head (remember the quarter note has a
black note head.

3. Quarter Note - is worth one beat. The quarter note is the third note; it looks like a filled-
in half note, with the same stem attached.

4. Eight Note - is worth ½ of a Quarter note. Eight notes are notated with an oval, filled-in
note head and a straight note stem with one flag note flag.

5. Sixteenth Note - a sixteenth note will receive a time value of one-fourth. Notes that are
notated with an oval, filled-in note head. They have a straight stem and two flags.
RESTS

Rests are musical symbols used to designate when to pause and not play.

There are different kinds of rests in a musical composition.

1. Whole Rests - a whole rest lasts for four beats, it means, it would be the
equivalent of 4 beats of silence. It is rectangular shaped and some people love to
refer to it as an upside down hat.

2. Half Rest - a half rest gets 2 beats and is drawn as a filled-in rectangle sitting on
top of the middle line of the musical staff. It looks like a hat.

3. Quarter Rest - A quarter rest is equal in time value to a quarter note. It's a period
of silence that lasts for one beat in 4/4 time.

4. Eight Rest – is one half of a beat of silence. It consists of one slanted line with a
flag attached at the top. It looks like number 7.

5. Sixteenth Rest - one quarter or one fourth of a beat of silence. It looks similar to
an eighth rest, but it has two flags instead of one. It is the same duration as a
sixteenth note, but it represents silence.
Below is a table which displays whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes and
rests, along with how long each one lasts, measured in beats.

DOT - A dot that is placed after the note to indicate a change in the duration of a note.
The dot adds half of the value of the note to itself.

For example, a dotted half note gets 3 beats - value of a half note is 2, half of 2 is 1 so 2
+ 1 = 3.

Original Beat ½ of the original Total Beat Value

Value Beat Value
dotted whole note / rest 4 2 = 6 beats
dotted half note/ rest 2 1 = 3 beats

Let the students listen to the following folk songs;

“Paruparong Bukid” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJK0ve_0xdI

Si Pelimonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irydqcYOY5c

and Dandansoyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQLCHm90kiE
The Song Paru-parongbukid uses a 2/4 time signature. A measure should be two beats
and a note that will received one beat is a quarter note.

The song uses 4/4 time signature. Each measure has four beats and a quarter notes/
rests receives one beat.

Dandansoy uses a 6/8 time signature. There are six beats in a measure. Eight note/ rest
receives one beat.

FOLLOW – UP QUESTION

1.What have you observed in the musical composition?

2.Can you identify the different musical composition used in the song?
STUDY AND READ EACH CONTENT

See illustration below.

In a compound meter, each beat can be divided into thirds. For example in 6/8 time, the
eighth note represents one beat and there are six beats in each measure.

The time signature 3/4 tells a musician that a quarter note represents one beat in a
measure (the lower number) and that there will be three beats in each measure (the top
number).

Example is 4/4 time signature. In this time signature there are 4 beats possible in each
measure, and the quarter note represents one beat. The top number of the time
signature tells how many beats are in each measure, and the bottom number tells which
note will represent one beat.
A time signature consists of two numbers; the upper number and the lower number.
The upper number of the time signature tells us the number of beats that should be in
each measure. The lower number of the time signature tells us the kind of note that
receives one beat.

Measure is a segment of time within a piece of music defined by a given number of

beats. Each measure is separated by a barline. Within each measure, beats are
represented by a particular note value and the boundaries of the bar are indicated by
vertical bar lines. Dividing music into bars provides regular reference points to pinpoint
locations within a piece of music. It also makes written music easier to follow, since
each bar of staff symbols can be read and played as a batch.

ACTIVITY

Draw a bar ine for each of the following rhythmic pattern using the given time signature.
ACTIVITY

Use notes or rests to complete each staff according to the given time signature. Use at
least 3 measures.

1. 2/4

2. ¾

3. 4/4

Conducting Gestures

At the end of the module, the learners will be able to:

9. Demonstrates the conducting gestures of 2/4, ¾, 4/4, and 6/8 time signature.

ACTIVITY:

Sing a song “Leron – LeronSinta” and observe the musical composition inside the box.

FOLLOW – UP QUESTION

5. What have you observed in the musical composition?

6. Can you identify what are the notes and rests used in the song?
STUDY AND READ EACH CONTENT

Conductingindicates the number of beats inherent to each measure. The conducting

gestures depend upon the tempo of the musical arrangement. It is a hand gesture to
lead the singers and instrumentalists into the right track following the signs and symbols
according to the composition.

Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as a concert, by way of

visible gestures with the hands, arms, face and head. The primary duties of the
conductor are to unify performers, set the tempo, execute clear preparations and beats
(meter), and to listen critically and shape the sound of the ensemble.Communication is
non-verbal during a performance, however in rehearsal frequent interruptions allow the
conductor to give verbal directions as to how the music should be played or sung.

4/4 6/8

The song “Leron – Leron” Sinta is an example of 4/4 time signature which has four
beats in a measure.

RHYTHMIC PATTERN

At the end of the module, the learners will be able to:

10. Creates rhythmic pattern in time signatures of 2/4, ¾, 4/4, and 6/8.

ACTIVITY:

REVIEW PAST LESSONS

Let the students do the conducting gestures

2/4 ¾ 4/4 6/8

STUDY AND READ EACH CONTENT

Rhythmic Patterns are the division of beats into patterns of sound by clapping or
tapping the beat or a combination of notes and rests in a measure. The Rhythmic
pattern is also indicated by the words and syllable of words.

Rhythm is made up of regular repeated patterns of movement or sound. It is also a

systematic arrangement of musical sounds, principally according to duration and
periodical stress.

Rhythmic pattern can learn by clapping or tapping the steady beat or equivalent beat of
notes and rests. Lets take a look at the example.

Echo clap the rhythms. Let the students follow you.

Using the first staff, the given time signature is 4/4, it is clearly stated that each
measure should have 4 equivalent beats. On the first measure there are 4 quarter
notes, each quarter note receives 1 beat. On the 2 nd measure there are 3 quarter notes
and 1 quarter rest, quarter rest is equivalent to 1 beat.

Using the 2nd staff, the given time signature is ¾, it is clearly stated that each measure
should have 3 equivalent beats. On the first measure there are 3 quarter notes. Second
measure there is 1 half note and 1 quarter note. Half note is equal to 2 beats. 3 rd
measure there are 3 quarter notes. 4 th measure there is 1 quarter note and 2 quarter
rests.

ACTIVITY

Create a simple rhythmic pattern in 2/4, ¾, 4/4, and 6/8 time signature using
different notes or rests.

Example:

2/4
3/4

4/4

6/8

ACTIVITY

Direction: Complete the rhythmic pattern by supplying the correct notes and rests.
