Topic 1: The Challenges of Enterprise Backup
After completing this topic, you will be able to discuss the challenges of performing backups in todays enterprises.
Achieving Complete Data Protection
The hurdles to overcome include: Several (distributed) sites No remote staff Different types of systems Different types of data Different data availability and recovery needs
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) How much data loss you can tolerate Recovery Time Objective (RTO) How quickly you can get the data back into production
Shrinking (or no) backup window
How the Backup Landscape Is Evolving
New Backup Technologies
Virtual tape libraries (VTLs) Disk-to-Disk (D2D)
Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape (D2D2T) staging
Virtualized systems Compliance requirements for data protection and retention
How NetBackup Addresses These Challenges
Distributed and extensible client/server architecture Snapshot technologies to support point-in-time copy (PITC) backups
Backup traffic management and load balancing
Simplified configuration through wizards Scheduled backups supporting automatic retries
Faster client backups using simple configuration settings
Choice of administrative tools
Choice of monitoring and reporting tools
Topic 2: The NetBackup Environment
After completing this topic, you will be able to:
Identify the function of the Master Server, Media Server, EMM Server, and Clients. Diagram the NetBackup product architecture.
NetBackup Component Definitions
Master server Controls backup and recovery activities
