1st type of retailer STORE RETAILERS:


1) Ownership It include independent store, retail chain, franchising, leased department, co- operative store.
a) RETAIL CHAIN :

Chain stores are retail outlets that share a brand and central management, and usually have standardized business methods and practices. 1st chain store was British owned W.H.Smith, sells books, stationary, magazines, newspaper, entertainment products, etc. Largest retain chain store Wal Mart.

b) INDEPENDENT RETAILER : An independent retailer is one who builds his/her business from the ground up. From the business planning stage to opening day, the independent retail owner does it all. He/she may hire consultants, staff and others to assist in the business endeavor. The opportunities are endless. E.g. pan, bidi shop.

c) Franchising :
Franchising is the practice of using another firm's successful business model. The franchisor is a supplier who allows an operator, or a franchisee, to use the supplier's trademark and distribute the supplier's goods. In return, the operator pays the supplier a fee. India is one of the biggest franchising markets because of its large middle-class of 300 million who are not reticent about spending and because the population is entrepreneurial in character.

it is famous concept and found all over the world, some of these stores are successful
basically to provide good and high wages, low cost and benefit the members collective decisions are taken, given equal status to all

a) Self service There are many products where customers serve themselves as per their own requirements. E. g : ATM (automated teller machine ) b) Limited service retailers put more varieties of products under one roof, and their aim is customer satisfaction and customer contentment. c) Full service - Firm with a large range of goods offered at retail prices, and which provides advice and detailed information on goods sold through its trained sales force.

a) Food oriented :

super market - A large store that sells a variety of food and household items to customers. - low cost, low margin, high volume, self service operation which serves total needs for food, laundry, household product, etc. E.g. - hypercity (malad)
Convenience store - small stores located near residential area, open for long hours, operates seven days a week, carry limited line of high turnover and has slightly higher prices. E.g. Apollo pharmacy , Bharat petroleum

1. Departmental store
The concept of a departmental store first originated in France. These are large retail store, offer wide variety of products under one roof separated by different departments. It has several departments, which are classified and organized accordingly. Departments are made as per different types of goods to be sold. E.g. Big Bazaar, Benzer, Globus

2. Discount store

These store offers its items at a lower price than many other retail stores. Discount stores are often able to drop their prices due to efficient distribution methods.

A drug store that sells health care products and medicine. Customers can buy both over- the- counter and prescription medication at a drug store. It is not uncommon for drug stores to carry other frequently used household products and merchandise.
3) SPECIALITY STORE A specialty store is a store, usually retail, that offers specific and specialized types of items. These stores focus on selling a particular brand, or a particular type of item. E.G- If you buy something from the Gap, it will have a Gap label.

2nd type non- store based


a) electronic retailing E-tailing is the selling of retail goods on the Internet.
The word E-tail has its roots in the word retail. Here the letter E stands for electronic since the shopping process happens through the electronic media (internet).

With the use of a web-space a virtual shop is created and the products are displayed through images in this space with the features and price tags. The payment to this product can be done in various modes as mentioned by the shopping site.

b) T.V HOME SHOPPING home shopping is buying things from home without actual interaction with the shops. Shopping takes place by watching product on television, understanding its features, quality, price

and then placing order.

c) DIRECT MAIL RETAILING In 1872, Aaron Montgomery Ward produced the first mail-order catalogue
Direct marketing is a channel-agnostic form of advertising that allows businesses and nonprofits organizations to communicate straight to the customer, that include Cell Phone Text messaging, email, online display ads, catalog distribution, promotional letters.

d) VENDING MACHINE Electronic machine used to disperse a product to a consumer after a certain amount of money has been put into the machine. commonly used to disperse beverages and snack items, but in recent years companies have introduced vending machines that disperse other items, electronic items such as digital cameras or iPods.
